Superchips ECU

Superchips ECU
Just got done installing my superchips modified ECU a few hours ago, just thought Id give impressions. OK, well in 1st gear I really didnt notice much difference at all, through 2nd it was pretty much the same, maybe pulling a little bit harder toward the top end. Through 3rd I noticed a difference, it seemed to go through the gear a bit quicker, definately stonger. In 4th is where I noticed the biggest difference, it actually seemed to have power (unlike usual ) It pulled pretty descent in 4th. All in all Id say that this is a pretty good mod, but Im kinda glad I got it used instead of paying like $300 for it.

www.MDrace.com makes them. It is kind like a sub-division of superchips. I got it used off of someone, so I got it for like less than 1/2 of what they charge. They offer basically 2 styles, a street chip and a autoX one. I'm not sure the exact differences, but the street one claims 20HP/20TQ, and the AutoX claims 25HP/20TQ. I have the autoX one. They basically just modify the timing and fuel curve, leaning out the top end a little. They had a dyno sheet on their website of a stock '86 N/A 5-speed that they got the numbers from. If I remember correctly the gains started to be seen at about 4k rpm, and gradually going up to a peak of a 20HP gain at almost 8k. I belive the rev-limiter is increased also. The gains are definately noticable, but I guess that its such a gradual gain over the rpm range that it doesnt register much on the ol' butt dyno Like I said though, it is most noticable in 3rd and 4th gears. I think that 1st and 2nd go too quick to really notice that big of a difference. It sqeals the tires in 2nd more than it did before though.

I have heard nothing but good things about a tuned ecu for the n/a cars. This is one of my planned mod's. I think people feel the tq. more than anything. Which is exactly what these cars need.

Honestly I have no idea what an extra 20HP/20TQ should feel like, but Like I said it did make a slightly noticable difference. I dont doubt that you could get the gains that they claim. If you ever look at their site look up their ECU's for a Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel....claim a 60HO/185Lbs TQ increase!! hehe. They gain more Torque than my car has
And Silkworm....It is just a reprogrammed ECU, you send them your stock unit, they modify it, and send it back. All you do is reinstall it, thats all. It probably would be a cool thing for you in AutoX or whatever kind of racing you do, because its probably not "allowed", but how would they ever know, there is no way to tell it from a stock ECU
Im sure you could get the same results with a S-AFC, and messing with the timing, along with the help of a dyno. I dont really have access to a dyno, and I dont have any crazy mods planned for my car, so I just got this and its alot easier.

This guy did a review of one of those chips with a great amount of detail. You can find it under the How To section if this link doesn't take you straight to it.

If you could get 25hp from something that simple everyone would do it. But if you ask me... that's impossible.

Well, a friend of mine just bought a 2002 VW Gti 337 and he and I started arguing because he said that this chip allowed you to gain 40HP and 70 ft-lbs. TQ. I called B.S. right away, even when he had dyno graphs of the increase. He told me it costs $2400 and i asked a CPU chip expert said that for that price it sounded about right. But he said that was the cost of a new ECU, and that they sell that for $300 to have yours reprogrammed. So, I guess it POSSIBLE, for the price of the chip is what I think determines the performance gain.

$2,400 does NOT sound right! The only thing that costs in the computer upgrading process is the time and research. Once you get that done it's only cents and a little time to do it. It's actually pretty simple to do if you have the right equipment.

Yep...alls that a chip does is alter the fuel curve and timing, perhaps reset the rev-limiter also. With the S-AFC you can do whatever you want with your fuel, and you can advance/retard timing a little manually, although something like a Haltech would be the best since you could program it very precisely.
