Supercharger....with what?

I just want to say, that im n00b to start out wit, but im learning, mostly from forum peeps, (thanx) anwayz..
I was thinking about putting a supercharger in my 7, i have an 89vert, mods are streeported enging, RB headers, silencer, and bonez intake.
atkinsrotary is pretty close to where i live, and they offer a SC for the 13b, and i was wondering if i were to get dat, what other 'mods' should i add to accomodate the supercharger. I dont want to be like those *** rice kids, that get a stock honda and put "nos" in it and ahve it f' my car up. so i was wondering if i need like an aftermarket ECU or better fuel pump or injectors, or whatever.

The Atkins SC uses a Holley carb. You completely remove your fuel injection system, ecu, intake manifold. You need a new low pressure fuel pump as well. With a streetported motor (depending on how big) and a properly tuned carb you can hit up to about 300 fwhp but thats it. The roots style supercharger that Atkins sells is very inefficient, somehwere on the order of around 35% compared to a turbos 80%+. This does limit ultimate power on pump gas due to excessive air intake temperatures. The good thing about that supercharger is that since it is a positive displacement unit, you will have full boost almost immediately off idle but only a couple psi difference between there and redline. This will give fantastic lowend power and will feel wonderful for daily stop and go driving. If you have an auto you'll love it. You'll spend under $3000 total on the project and you'll no longer be emissions legal. Thats quite a bit of money for what you are getting and you won't have the ability to get any more power out of it. I'm not trying to discourage you from doing it but just be aware of what you are getting and how much performance for the money. You'll be the different kid on the block for sure.

i do have an auto, but i have half the stuff, i need for a conversion, i still need the flywheel and tranny, and a couple other things, but yea. kkthx

Camden S/C

I've been looking at that S/C kit too.
I have a 90 Vert 5 speed (check sig)
I didn't know it was that inefficient though.
If the intake temps are so high, can you get an intercooler? I don't know, I just want to go fast.....and with the super heavy vert, i need help

It isn't a very cost effective solution. I imagine that for the same amount of money you pay Atkins to install a supercharger you can pay them to install a turbo drivetrain and have more potential should you want to go for more power.

I like the idea of a supercharger, but they cost too much to be worth it for me.

I wanted to add a few links to articles on the turbo vs. supercharging topic because I always see a lot of neigh-sayers "discouraging" supercharging and not giving all the facts about both sides. I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other, they both have there advantages and disadvantages.

Turbos are more efficient and have a better power potential. On the other hand, superchargers offer lower intake temperatures and fewer vehicle modifications (as apposed to installing a turbo on the same N/A car ).

As far as choosing a boost option for an RX-7 if you want big hp numbers then your better option is to sell your current car and buy a TII, it saves you a lot of time and in the long run money. Of course, if you have a special model where a turbo was an option (i.e. vert, GTU, etc.) then you have 2 options. Install a supercharger with will run you about $3000 due to lack of options in this area. Or, do a TII conversion, which is a long, difficult, and expensive process especially if you are going to do it right and not cut corners (this has been covered on this forum before and i won't go into it here).

One last thing which is really a double-edged sword is that boost is addictive. A lot of the guys on here that will tell you not to supercharger have forgotten that not all of us need 350-400hp to enjoy our cars (I'm exaggerating a little bit here but you get the idea). For those of us coming from an N/A, the 220~250 hp that a supercharger supplies with it's near bolt-on install is quite attractive.

What it comes down to is what's right for you and that you are happy with your car. I mean we all want to enjoy are cars and no one can take that away from us.
