no gear select...trans/clutch?

I recently just put another engine in my '86 GXL..with that a new ClutchMasters clutch, presuure plate, throwout bearing, n' pilot bearing as well. As ive been driving it lately, it is very hard to put into first gear, and alot of times it will grind when trying to do so, and this is at a complete stop with clutch all way way to the floor. Reverse is the same way as well. This did this same thing before I had my new clutch and before my motor popped..and one time i even remember not being able to go into any gears at all for a bit, then finally it would give and let me select. Lately, its gotten really bad, and I noticed a kind of grinding sound, coming from what I think i my trans. while driving..its doesnt do it in neutral which would have me thinking throwout bearing, I put new 80w-90 gear oil in the other day, and it seemd to get a bit better with the noise. It aslo did this wierd thing where i was at a stop light, and i had the clutch in, with it in 1st gear, and the car would try to move even though the clutch was to the floor. Now, I can't go into any gear AT all with the car running, when its off, its goes through them fine. And if i try to start the car in 1st gear with the clutch it, the car will jump forward. I've bled my clutch, adjusted the freeplay (just for the hell of it), fluid level is fine.

Also, when i changed the fluid (it was low) it had a burnt smell too it, and on the drain plug was kind of sliver gear oil (no flakes, just silver). The burnt smell, is that semi-normal and just the sign of fluid needing to be changed like in a Auto?

Help?

Sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging correctly. Whether this is due to it not being adjusted correctly, or maybe due to your master cylinder having a leak internally. This is a similar problem to what I had in my turboII which turned out to be the master cylinder.

You can do this with engine off. Check freeplay. Make sure minimum amout. Hold pedal to floor for 1 minute then check freeplay again. If greater freeplay, hydraulic problems, probably clutch master cyl.
The pressure plate is not disengaging all the way to allow the disc to stop spinning, and therefore the trans keeps turning.

before it got really bad...i noticed (recently, after the new clutch) that in 1st with the clutch in you heard a kind of whirring sounds? Pilot bearing? A brand new one was put in, or maybe just the sound of my clutch not releasing all the way and slipping? Any other input?

when my fiero did this it was due to the clutch master malfunctioning. Same symptoms as you, funky noises, grinding while shifting, etc.

Does the clutch seem to engage really close to the floor? If you pump the pedal (10-20 times) does it get better for a little bit? If you hold the pedal to the floor for a while and then release does it feel really soft?

My transmission is having the same type of symptons but are not hydraulic related. Ive pin pointed it on the pilot bearing also. In your care, maybe a leaking hydraulic system?

i've heard that what im explaining is what a pilot bearing sounds like when it goes out...but that wouldnt yeild me from selecting gears..and it did this before my new pilot bearing/clutch etc and after. I hope its just hydraulics..i really dont wanna pull my trans off again.

Good luck with your p-bearing man....there a blast to remove....damn them!!!!

One more thing...when i bled my clutch...i did it the way it says in the manual (just like brakes) hold clutch to floor, open bleeder on slave until air bubbles go away..after i close the bleed screw, the clutch would stick to the floor. I did this several times, and it still stuck, and it was just pure fluid coming out...still sound like clutch master cyl?

This sounds like what my master cylinder was doing. The clutch would stay on the floor. I just replaced the master cylinder and it solved the problem.
