Question supercharger??

Hi I don't know much about superchargers I know what they do but how much ruffly do they cost for the second generation rx7 turbo?? thanks alot

a turbo and a super charger are the same basic thing, only the turbo is driven off exhaust gases leaving the engine and a super charger is driven off of a belt like your A/C or power steering.

well isn't a supercharger instand power and a turbo has to spool up so there for a supercharger is better right??

depends on what you are using your car for...

for example the worst things about each are:

Super charger: worse gas mileage, limited RPM operating range

Turbo: heat, inconsistent boost based on demand

The supercharger's I've seen, and i haven't seen many... are always at the same boost at certain rpms... so like at 4000 rpm it will be like 4 psi all the time, and at 6000 it will be at like 6 psi all the time... unless the car is under load, ie. going up a hill, towing something... someone else want to clarify this? I haven't read up much on supercharger's...

Thats what i would do if you really want to get more power out of you car upgrade the turbo to one that has a greater RPM span than the stock Tii one.

well Toyota did have a MR2 in the early 90's that was both supercharged and Turbocharged... they used a clutch design on the Supercharger (that would only allow the supercharger to work below 4000 RPM) and the Turbo was designed to be at full boost around 4500 RPM.

So you had the advantage of lowend boost from the supercharger, but switched to turbo boost at higher RPMs where a supercharger would be out of room.

There was talk about that same engine making it into the J-spec version of the Celica GT-4 (All trac), but I don't know if it ever did get built.

Super and Turbo chargers work differently. Turbo isn't as effective at lower RPM because it uses exhaust flow to propell it's turbine, while in a supercharger, you feel the boost instantly when the throttle is openend because it is belt driven by the motor. RX-7s don't have the greatest low end torque, wouldn't it make sense to have a supercharger to fill that gap? Well i guess that's where twin turbos do their stuff.
