sunroof wont open :-(

I push the button and it tries like hell to go, but then it doesnt. does this sound like a dead motor to anyone else? it could be electrical because the clock/warning light panel only works occasionally also.

same thing happens to me, only I think it's the rails, either rusted, stripped or need lube. The idiot lights seem to get unplugged often..don't know why..LOL so it's probably a loose connection with those.

Have you tried to push up on the roof while pressing the button? Sometimes the motor that lifts the roof fries, my 89 GXL has that same problem but will open with the simple push of my hand then will fully open on its own and close by itself too.

Mine does the same thing. I greased it up real good one time and it worked for a while, but quit eventually. So i just push it up.

I am certain a search would yeild a ton on this one. But, from experience, let me assure you that if you hear the motor it is most likely just dirty and in need of a good cleaning and lube with only a lithium lubricant. Rust along the rails absent exterior rust is very unlikely.

If you have to tap or push to get it started, clean it.

NO dont lube thats the reason why it doesnt work after awhile. the track is made up of nylon brushes. get it open push up on it and it should open then take laquer thinner and clean out the track really good. the lub gums up the nylon brushes and will make it stop working after awhile promise me DONT LUBE and it will work like a champ

Same here. If you hear the electric motor running but it wont lift its because the lifter is dead. Just give it a nice helping push to get it going.

Don't use WD-40. Use white lithium grease (NOT the spray).

as far as my sunroof:

one side will go up and it will get stuck and just click alot, but will go back down fine. a mazda tech at my work told me it was something with the cable drive(not sure what that is), but he said it is more trouble than its worth, it involves taking the whole headliner out and practictly everything related with the sunroof. and kinda expencive for parts as he said.

dont know if that helps anyone...

Your best bet is to buy a new sunroof assembly from the forums or possibly try to find one at a junkyard then use the link I posted in the previous page to remove the current set up, clean it and then replace what ever is broken with your new parts.
