Im having a problem getting the sping to move the bottom one move finfe but the other is a pain. That sucker wont budge i tryed so many ways to get it to move but no luck mite be rusted 4 good even tho every thing eles works fine. Any suggestions???

 

I'm pretty sure I just need a new one, as I believe the previous owner broke it.

mine refuses to move at all, I have the headliner off and I e tried the tool to do it manually and still no. When I hit the switch, the motor turns for maybe an eight of a turn and stops. Also, if I push up on the sunroof, the passenger side lifts freely.

 

OK so if one of the cables has broken how exactly do you replace it? They are crimped on to the slider so 1. where can a buy a new cable? 2. how do i put it on?
I'm pretty sure its broken, of course i'm going to have to pull it find out.
Good idea with the shims, that and the rewire should really help.

 

I did much the same to mine cleaned out old grease with a rag and light oil... it didnt clean as well but the job did get done then i wiped it out and regreased it using a small brush like a painters brush. and i havent had to take it all apart yet but if i do i will be refering to this thread...

It would be a good idea to spray some break cleaner down in the copper tubes that
house the track driving springs (whatever those would be called). Because for me,
they became so clogged with dusty grease that on track seized which caused the
motor to break the drive spring. If you have the assembly out definitely blast out
those copper tubes. Nice write up!

 

im having problems taking the motor for the sunroof. there are 3 screws but i cant take get them out. i tried pv blaster, and wd40 but dont seem to help.

 

I wish i found this before i ripped my poor car apart

 

diggin up a old thread, but how does the roof lining fix the sunroof panel. Mine keeps falling you, It has al the lugs and slots in the clips at the back, but nothing holds it in.

Theres a spring that attaches to component where the arrow is pointing. Can anyone take a picture or tell me where the other end of this spring attaches? I've look at the shop manual but I couldn't make anything of it.

 

To further clarify what spring I'm talking about, it's the spring attached to the "shutter assembly" mentioned in the shop manual.

 

My sunroof is seized closed. Dont know what to do

 

I never said I was good at spelling. Just good at taking things apart.
The spring in question connects directly in line with where it's mounted. A small metalic tab where the hook is looped on.

Crank on it manually, if it won't pop out help the sunroof by pushing on the back side. Once it's popped out you should find the process much easier to rotate.

 

First off, thanks so much for posting this how-to! I did this procedure last year, (everything except the adding shims step) which seemed to fix my problems. I originally was having symptoms #1 & #2, which eventually progressed to symptoms #3 & 4 as well. All of that was fixed for about a year after doing the job, and mysunroof worked great - but that was without adding any shims. Unfortunately, now I'm back to seeing symptoms #1 & 2 again. So I'm going to try this again, and probably add the shims this time around, and also switch to that highly recommended Honda "Shin Etsu" silicon grease. Last time, I cleaned the cables & tracks while the sunroof assembly was still in the car, which was a PITA, and I suspect left some crud behind that I couldn't get to.

I do have a question though that I can't seem to find an answer for here or anywhere in the FSM - Is it possible to completely remove the cables/springs from the copper tubes and slide/trolley assemblies on each side, preferably with the sunroof assembly still in the car? Anyone know how to do this without breaking anything? FWIW, at this point I have the headliner removed, sunroof panel & motor unit is removed, but the sunroof assembly is still in the car. I could remove the sunroof assembly from the car, but would rather not if possible. Goal is to get a more complete cleaning of the cable/springs, copper tubes & tracks and all friction points before re-lubing & reassembly.

It might be possible to remove the cables, but if the sunroof frame were to remain in the car, you would need to unscrew the aluminum slide rails from the frame. I can't verify if this would work or not, but the pictures should give you a good idea on if you want to give it a try or not.

As an aside, though it isn't the preferred method, removing the sunroof assembly is not as daunting as I thought it would be. I removed and reinstalled myself, but a second person would make the job much easier.

 

Thanks for the link & pictures Jerry, that is very helpful! I'm OK with removing the whole assembly from the car - FSM procedure looks easy enough, but it would be easier with a helper. An alternative to a helper I thought of is a cherry picker/engine crane - I'll rig mine up with some straps to support the weight of the sunroof assembly through the open hole in the roof. Then I can undo all the bolts without it falling on my head. For installation, just reverse the procedure, using the crane to support it & help maneuver it into position while bolting it back in.

In theory removing the whole assembly should solve the problem of thorough cleaning. With it all out of the car, I won't have to worry about getting solvent on things it shouldn't. Also I suppose I should pull it out anyway to check for any rusty surprises that may lurking under the tracks, though it looks pretty clean from what I can see on the undersides with the headliner off (no perforation anywhere or visible signs of rot)

EDIT: Just compared Jerry's pictures with my sunroof assembly as it sits in the car, and verified that you can't access all of the screws that would be required to remove the tracks with the sunroof assembly in the car. The roof itself prevents access to the screws in the corners, so the whole assembly would need to come out to remove the tracks.
