Lightbulb sunroof motor removal?

Hi guys,

I was thinking I could just remove the sunroof motor and make a locking mechanism to hold it in place when its open and when its closed. I wouldn't mind having it manual. And I've heard that the motor weighs 20-25 lbs, so if I can remove that kind of weight up top that would be great. Plus it would be one less electrical thing to deal with.

So can it be done fairly easily?

I've searched and found nothing of people doing this.

thanks

The sunroof motor wieghs about 1-2 pounds tops. Removal of this is pointless and requires to ro remove your a pillar trim, front winshield trim, trim behind the headliner and the trim behind the seats, along with visors, rear view mirror and then drop the headliner. Not too difficult but the clips that hold these brittle items can break or the trim can break for that matter. Wieght reduction is always a nice thing but if your looking to make the car faster your looking at only gaining a tenth of a second on the 1/4 for every 100 pounds removed from the vehicle.

I heard that the weight was 20-25 lbs, but that might have also included the sunroof and sliding mechanism.

Yes the entire assembly. I had this obsession about weight reduction on my yellow TII so I removed everything under the dash board (heater core, Blower motor etc. etc.) you know to be faster and guess where it got me? Can't drive in the rain or cold weather!

one question I have to replace the spring on the left side, is that going to be a bitch? I have already removed the roof interior.

the spring that is inside the rail on the left side, it is rusted badly. I'm buying a new one and wanted to know how hard it would be to take out.
