sun roof Repair
Has anyone ever tried to repair their sun roof? How hard was it to repair? I know That I have to remove the head liner to repair that but From there I'm not sure what to expect after I get to the tracks...

I did a complete clean out & relube on my 87 back in 98.
Open the sunroof part way.
Unsnap the sunroof inside liner.
Unbolt & remove the top piece.
Pull the mirror & switch assembly.
Pull all the surrounding plastic.
Pull the headliner.
Disconnect the 4 drain tubes.
4 nuts drop the whole assembly on your face.
---------------------------------------------
BUT - before you do all that, try cleaning & flushing the tracks & pull gear tapes with spray silicone lube.
Work it open & shut - spray - repeat.
I did that when I got the 91 (2 years ago) and it's still working great..

grease
the other guy is right, WD 40 is a terrible idea. I know from experience. I fixed 2 of these, use heavy WHITE grease and put some gobs of it in the tracks and work back and forth.
If it is jammed, then you have to take the whole thing apart and clean out the tracks with something like brake parts cleaner.
This is an all day job and takes patience! Do not force anything! The other guys directions are accurate.

Lubricating sunroof parts:
1. Never use WD-40 as it attracts dirt and will gum up rails.
2. Never use graphite on rails as it will gum up.
3. Use white lithium grease on all parts including left/right slider nylon cables.
4. On rails, it is ok to use white lithium grease spray - it will not attract dirt or soldify under very hot/cold temperatures.
If you lubricate every few years, you will never have problem with sunroof sliding as motor never fails unless abused.

i had a problem with my sunroof, it got stuck closed. i pulled the whole thing out of the car, and the wire on the one side froze up, so i had to cut the tube in about 7 places and manufacture a new tube i got at the hobby shop. filled her full of lithium grease and it works wonders, was my weekend project. sux in 100 degree weater though.
