sudden rear traction problems

hi all, quick question I'm really confused. I was out doing some drifting in a closed area, started out doing my normal warm ups 180, 360'z, and what not when suddenly my rear end just got really loose. It did notice that I had a bit of trouble ... breaking traction at first then bam I'm loose as well.... think of something really loose haha.

I couldnt even keep it straight, overcorrecting 2x more then normal. I'm really used to this car and I know it quite well and I feel something is definitely wrong. I went out and did the burnout test to see if I was laying down 2 strips of rubber (cause I have lsd) and I did ... maybe .. my lsd froze up and wasnt locking both the tires and ... just now it is? Anything in the rear I should be looking at? Maybe I broke rear sway bar or something? I didnt think 88 gtu came with that.

Please let me know what I should be looking for, I'm really in the dark here.
Thanks.

Get under the car and look at all your suspension links and springs and ****. I'm pretty sure all 2nd gen's had front and rear sway bars... I know my 88 SE does.

Sounds like your LSD is still working, so you probably broke something...

If the sway bar broke wouldn't it have understeer issues? Maybe it's your toe control arms or bushings. If you dont have solid ones maybe you busted the bushings. Maybe you broke a camber link. Only way to see is if you check.

no .... its still doing it, if I take a really sharp turn it feels like the rear is inside (so if im turning left the left tire) is coming off the ground, like HUGE body roll in the rear. Im going to go play with it more, sounds like maybe I broke ... the DTSS?

Sounds like a sway bar to me. Unfortunatly, I cant diagnose your car over the interweb. Get undernieth it and see if anything is broken or loose.

ok well ..... just went under there and .. nothing seems ... broken I'm going to replace the LSD fuid tomrrow, although it leaves 2 marks when I launch from a stop at like 5000 rpm, (weak NA remember hehe) it seems to be different when I acually turn ...... but u would think that an open diff ... would cause more traction compared to a locked LSD diff when turning? Hopefully the new LSD fluid will help.

What should I be getting? I only have royal purple around here, no redline
What model of royal purple and how much will I need for 88 gtu n/a lsd?

THANKS!

not sure but it makes it feel like some ones kicking the under side of the car like a thud, the best way to tell if its broke is to raise up the car and use a crow bar to try and pry the rear end up ward if it gives its broke, if its making more of a jolt and clanking noise then its probly the u joints. i think the stock mount from mazda is over a 100 and one from mazda trx is 100 or 160 depending on what you want.
i killed my first rx-7's tranny because i never fixed the mount it caused first gear to completely strip out, so i would take it pretty easy till you fix it.

ut oh .. ok thanks I will take it easy for a few days. (if you knew me at all you would know I cant do that but I will say I will) Im a VERY "spirited" driver haha. Every stop light is a new race haha. Anyways ... crap ok I will .. have to try that 2morrow, I have a HUGE list of things im doing 2morrow.

1. replace LSD fluid as soon as I figure out what model of royal purple I need.
2. take off intake and UIM so I can find my o2 sensor wire and solder it to the o2 sensor (the o2 sensor plugs broke off)
3. test to see if mounts are broken
4. test / find the vaccume leak after I put intake back on. I got a weird idle going on lately, and when spray starter fluid around the engine (not by intake air filter) idle really improves.... arg :P
5. Might as well replace my trannys fluid also, I wanted to wait for redline but ... royal purple will have to do
..... hmmm thats all I can think of for right now. I'm trying to think if I should just get the complete mounts and bushing sets, but I dont want to use DTSS eliminators, I really like DTSS

BTW, wow those bushing are expensive at those places, arnt these the same ??
http://www.mmr-direct.com/

they are like $52 for the rear subframe and rear differencial mounts 48$.

And yes, it feels like there is a small kid under my car kicking it every time. Crap I really better take it easy. Are they easy to install or do I need to take them to a shop? I dont have a press at my house. I need to get one.

Check the amber link too, that can cause clunking if the bolt breaks.

Just so you know, you PROBABLY don't have to take off the manifolds to get to the O2 sensor connector/plug (depending on what you're doing...). It's right behind the UIM, pass side, near the firewall. It should have a green connector.

Have you ever changed your rear end and tranny fluid? If it's not due... I wouldn't waste my money.

Like some other people said, check your diff mounts. A VERY common problem among these cars is the front diff mount. Keep us posted, mang.

Well I just got up from under the car (worked on finding the O2 sensor plug *harness side* all morning) I did have to take the UIM off, but no worries, I thought I had a vac leak because I would spray starter fluid between the engine and dynamic chamber and the idle would raise, but ... I found nothing.

Well while I was under it I found the front diff mount, and it does look like it has broke loose and is rubbing. I definitly need to replace it, but I dont know how soon. I will check mazda tomorrow because they can have it here by wednesday but Im not sure how expensive its going to be from them. I kinda want to go solid cause I dont want to have to change it again. (im kinda hard on the rear end haha)

I have some generic fluid in the transmission right now (Gl5 instead of just gl4) and Im grinding in second once the tranny gets really warm. Im guessing I need to either add, or change to some better performance (redline or royal purple). Still trying to think what I need to put in the LSD haha.....

Now my rear traction issues....... I was doing some test, and if I do left circles (not drifting or breaking traction badly) just making the rear skirt a little, I get MAD wheel hop. But if I turn right in cicles its a nice smooth skirt... going down the road acting like im doing a slalom the car is just all over the place. Massive body roll that makes me feel like im back in my 94 cavalier. Maybe 1 of my struts just died. I cant see anything else I have broke, I'm really confused. arg ....

you either have a blown shock or siezed shock, i have never seen a siezed shock but plenty of broken ones.

LR seems to be the most abused and first to blow out on FCs.
