Arrow Substitute for belt dressing??

Hey guys i lost my alt/waterpump belt yesterday and replace it today, my car now makes the most god awful screechign noise after 2k, both local auto stores are out of belt dressing and I wanna drive the car in the morning. Is there any other way to stop it without removing the belt?

Wrong answer, belt dress is not something you put on a new belt. You've got something else going on.

I would double check your idler pullies. I screwed up a while ago and tightened one too tight and it wouldn't spin freely. You should have heard the squeal and the smoke coming out.

If your belt are squealing they will only get worse and belt dressing won't help once the entire belt becomes glazed. Its a great temp fix though. Good luck and if you had neighbors like mine, I'd let it squeal particularly at 5:00 am.

Soap is a band-aid.

If you put the belt on too tight, it'll heat up and glaze. If you put it on too loose, it'll slip a lot and the friction will cause it to heat up and glaze. If it's misaligned it will, again, heat an glaze. The only reason it would be making noise is if it's beginning to glaze. Odds are you don't have the belt on tight enough, or you've got it on backwards or sideways or something (I've seen it done...)....

It was put on correctly and has only half an inch of play, which is what is suggested in my haynes. I dont think it had time to heat and glaze since it started squealing immediately after I installed it and started driving. I re- tightened it and it squeals just the same. I thought at first i might have got some coolant on the pulleys when i added some today but i figure it would have went away after some driving and it didn't. It doesnt make a sound at idle only around 2k and up.
