Subs in rear Compartments

Yes... I know there have probably been posts about this subject, but don't get all pissy on me for asking.

I have a 1988, and I wanted to know if there was a way to either upgrade my system or to utilize the rear compartments, or figure out another way to get some good, quality, audio in my ride.

Thanks.

Keyword here is how? How do you make the the box to maximize quality, like are there specific dimensions?

I've heard that soundproofing the doors with brownbread or dynamat will improve the quality of the door speakers many times over. consider that, and the fact that you can fit 6.5's in there, you should be able to get high quality sound using only the stock locations. if you want to add subs: prevailing opinion says that putting them in the storage bins sucks. personally, I have a box with 2 12's sitting on top of the bins (not inside them) facing the front of the car and it sounds bitchin'

oh p.s. inb-4duhl0ck! heh heh

I'm looking for quality, not ghetto-shake-the-windows pure volume. So, 6.5 in' in the stock door location, you say? And the compartments is a No then. I don't live in a high crime area so maybe I can do what you did? I want to spend a modest ammount and get the best quality for my buck.

Local bestbuy has some Rockford punch dual 10in i think. Is it possible just to set them in the back? I mean what all is involved with that? Would I need an amp, if so how big?

BTW, what was that p.s. all about? I didn't understand...

All you need to know about subs in the storage bins, courtesy of Icemark...

You can make it sound okay... with nice sealed fiberglassed enclosures, but it will never ever sound good.

I say this as a FC owner since 87 that saw the first of this type of set up in 86, and spent over 17 years installing or working for car electronics companies, and several years as a IASCA judge, as well as personally tried every type of enclosure and hundreds of speakers (including even transmission line and assorted band pass setups) in that area. Because of the car's internal acoustics, and structure. It is just a poor choice on either the FC or FD (but a great spot on the SA/FB). Top it off by half the people out there mount the speakers onto a board that screws into a flimsy piece of fiber re-enforced plastic that is only designed to hold storage bins and carpet up...

It will never ever ever ever ever sound good... it can sound okay... if you like okay sound then, by all means be my guest to use that area.

And everyone that thinks I am wrong, remember there is a difference between loud and good sound, as well as crisp clear hard hitting bass and boomy loud bass.

Thanks for clearing that up NZ. What brand sounds the best (generally speaking)? And where to mount the sub(s)?

There is no answer for that question. Go listen to speakers and see what you like. Thats all that matters. Just keep in mind that lots and lots of power for mids is always a good idea. Thats my opinion anyways. But if you want suggestions I suggest polk momo components, large alpine 4 channel and whatever sub amp combo you can afford.

An Alpine R-10" (These can be had for cheap on ebay and sound good. I have one of these.) is plenty for our little cars and it gives out great sound quality with very little space required.

If you take a look, most subwoofer companies when selling/showing you will have specifications for the subwoofer enclousures. With some math as well as some woodworking skills you can make a basic box. These are much cheaper then Best Buy or some audio shop.

A friend of mine and I built a small enclosure which fits between the rear shock tower and the very back of the hatch. Its small and basic but gets the job done and sounds better then having someing in the bins location.

All my opinion of course... Well good luck.

Can I show you the speakers I'm looking at and then we can figure out if I need to modify anything? (or just pay the huge costly ammount and let them install it)

All manufacturers will supply a spec sheet. Type R's are great subs. Can't go wrong there.

hey convert ,, im not trying to sound like a *****,, the best way to figuire out what you want is to do some research on some car audio sites.. visit your local car stereo shop, look into your wallet figuire out what you want , what you can afford , and what you think looks good.. what i like in sound could be 100 times different than what you like.. i like clear, and not so much bass. whereas the next guy might want a system that will rattle the neighbors windows from 2 miles away.. ill tell you this. look online for something you like the look of .. read the specs.. or go to a store with a audio display board.. play with some of the radios/speakers/subs ,, play the music you are going to be listening to the most .. try out each one , fuguire out what you like best out of all the componets and narrow it down from there... it took me almost a solid year to buy most of my compents for my last system .. i ended up pulling a 148 spl with 2 10's but thats what i like.. and alot of people tell me they like my system ,, alot of people say they dont .. its your car.. its your music.. make yourself happy first ,, cuz you have to drive/live with it
