Sub cabinets

hey...i was wondering if anyone has tried to fit subs in the compartments in an 87 coupe?
My ideas were to have the sub firing against the seat, with the magnet inside the cabinet and have plexiglass in place of the covers, so you can see it?
I dont know anything about pressure/space etc Is it possible to do?
If not, is there any other custom speaker setups that arent way too much money?
pics would be nice =)
thanks

From every post I have read on this, I have gathered that the sound quality will suck *****. Put them in the back, facing the glass, so that the sound bounces off the hatch glass.

I have heard that is all depends on the subs you use! Search and find some more info.

I have experimented with a couple different subwoofer/enclosure combinations and found that I get a good increase (3-6 db) out of rearward-firing my subs (about an inch or two away from the spare tire covering), as opposed to forward-facing. Upward-firing was louder than facing forward, but not louder than facing directly backward. Best thing to do is to test it out yourself, if at all possible. For clean sound, I'd say sealed facing rearward... for SPL, ported or bandpass facing rearward -- but that's just my opinion (my 1" stuffed, sealed Audiobahn Alum 10 gets the job done for me).

Well if you get 2 10's one for each comparment that would sound good. A buddie of mine did that in his 88 and he is a custom installer and he has been doing it for over 15 yrs. You just need to have the right box in the compartment area.
I would also reccomend some really good subs, nothing cheap. Also spend some really good money on your amp. It is like the engine in your car if you want it to really perform good then make sure you spend some cash.
But it mainly depends on what kind of system you want. If you want a killer loud system then put the subs in the back. But if you want a really clean, full sound put them in the compartment area.
If you got any ?'s pm me.

Ah man, search all the threads on this in interior/audio forum.

The compartments suck... yeah with some big woofers, enough time, power and money you might make them sound okay, but nothing like they can sound if you put them in the rear area, either firing towards the hatch or towards the back of the car.

The standing wave that gets created when just bolting a panel or woofer box that fires upwards in the storage bin area, kills the bass being created, making you use bigger and bigger speakers.

While I am sure Josh's friends system sounds nice, I bet I can put two 8's in each rear corner in a tiny band pass box and blow away his two 10" mounted in the bin area.

Its just not a great spot in the FC or FD.

I cant agree with you more that you could get WAY more sound by placing them in the rear! But I am just saying that if he wants a stealth install and a SQ car that isnt a bad way to go. Like I said though you will have to spend alot of money.
I only have one MMAT pro audio 10 in my car now and it is real loud. And I have it in the rear firing into the rear hatch!
It just matters on what kind of system you want.
If you want it big and loud then I am 100% sure that you need to not place your subs in the bins.
Put them in the rear and either fire them straight up for less ratles. Or straight back/ angled facing the hatch window. I would reccomend going with the straight up idea less rattles. Which is key.
Also just my 2 cents I wouldnt reccomend bandpass unless you only listen to rap.
again that is my own 2 cents.
to each there own

low frequency(sp) waves are long...from what I understand you need about 6ft for most bass waves, you are probably best with you subs in a box on top of the bins but facing the hatch so the sound bounces back to you.

I have a friend with a stereo who had the subs facing forward with his back seat down you could barely hear them in the car, but when we turned them around and the wave bounced off the trunk...whole different story.

Now if you have a bandpass box you could probably put it in the bins, due to their design.

One of the atlanta rx7 owners. I've got his name in a book somewhere.

The car is real nice, the interior 2 tone was well done, the audio system sounded good, sleepy-eyed headlights were sweet, neon undercar lights were cool, japaniese dragons on the sunroof, etc...

unless you remove the bins and customize a box it just won't work for ya. Take a look at the last picture the sub boxes and the amp rack have replaced the compartments completely. That's the way to go. Sounds nice, looks nice, just very hard to do

im not soo interested in spl or any competition, i just want moderate bass and looks =) I like the compartment idea because the rx7 compartments are unique from any other car IVE seen, or anyone around here anyways...I can get the boxes built for it..my pops friend does boxes...
So if i were to do the compartments idea, would i want the subs angled up+towards seat, up+towards hatch.. or any other way?
Btw..i like the subs next to the rear towers, but i dont like the amps in the middle, _i need my space_, plus its way to visible and possibly damagable? ;D
Thanks...

The amps have been moved since that pic was taken. I had only had the amps about 48 hrs and was too eagar to hear them to wait any longer

I used a piece of wood and placed it behind the rear carpet on the rear wall of the hatch, between the two subs and mounted the amp on the carpet, using the wood as support. The small amp, I moved to the fiberglass piece that holds our compartments, on the flat side beneath the seat that is vertical, out of the way.

My hatch is nice and open now.

To answer your question though, if you put your subs in the compartment, aim them at the hatch itself. This will result in a nice reverb effect.

Try to make it as close to the exact angle as possible. A dead-on hit is what you are trying to achieve hear.

Good luck and keep us posted
