Stupid question, sorry (turbo downpipe studs)

I just ordered and recieved and installed a stud for my turbo however one side is short and the other long. What side goes into the housing and what side goes to the downpipe? I was thinking no big deal and put the shorter side into the housing and the longer going to the downpipe however I've got an exhaust leak comming from around there so it may not be right. Anyways sorry for the dumb question

Thats the way I would have done it. Short side into the manifold.

I'm pretty sure that is the correct way to do it. Is there a chance that the stud backed itself out? How'd you tighten the stud into the turbo? 2 nuts method?

actually I tightened the bolt without the downpipe on until it was tight then took a pair of vice grips and held the stud while I loosed the bolt with a wrench. Is this a good method or shitty? Thanks for the info so far guys, I appreciate it.

I like using the 2 nut method.

Put the short side into the turbo and finger tighten as much as you can. Then on the long side thread on the 2 nuts right behind each other, but not all the way down to the end of the threads. Use 2 wrenches and tighten the one further inside against the outside one. Once tightened use a wrench or socket to tighten the outside one so the entire stud turns. Sometimes it is tricky getting the nuts off after but that's the method I always use to remove/install studs.

^^lol, I was thinking the same thing Anyways that does sound like a good way to tighten that nut. I'll do this tonight to see if this helps anything out. THanks

here is another question now. Have you guys ever changed the oil return line at the turbo while the turbo was still on? If you have any tips would be great! Thanks.
