stupid question?
When we put the engine in my friend's car, we put teflon tape on the water temp sender (not knowing this would screw up the ground and reading it gave), so now the needle sits all the way at H in the on position. I was wondering though, we couldn't get it started because it had no spark, so is there any kind of spark cut-out if the engine overheats? I was just thinking that since the rotary gets killed by overheating very easily, that it might have a spark cut-out if it overheats, and right now it's "overheating" badly.

There are seperate temp sensors for the gauge and ECU. The gauge's sensor is on the rear plate under the oil filter; the ECU's sensor is on the back of the water pump. So a malfunctioning gauge will have no effect on ECU operation.
As for a safety cut-out, I highly doubt it. While modern ECU's will put go into limp mode when things get bad, I'd be surprised if an ECU as old as the FC's does this. I think failure of the S5's electronic OMP is the only thing that triggers a limp mode.
