Stuff on the hood?

How necessary is the heat retardant fabric on the buttom of the hood?
My car has been undercoated and everywhere under the hood, doors and even trunk is dark yellow undercoating crap. It looks horrible and I want to start cleaning everything until its shiny again.
I dont plan on letting the car see a full winter or if I do I'll get the cheap undercoating crap.

Can I rid my hood of the fabric or will the hood warp?

leave it there. it is supposed to fall off if your engine catches fire and put it out.

It doesn't. It mearly protects the paint on the hood from heat.

You can remove it if you wish.

WARNING!!!!! when you take it off, you may be able to hear your injectors ticking outside the car... Weird, but a lot of guys seem to think that when you remove the horse hair, the aluminum roof amplifies the injector ticking!!!!

I could hear my injectors anyway, but when i took the crap off, i could hear all sorts of other noises as well!!!

I took it off my car cause it was rubbing on my polished stut bar. (i know... bling bling... but it took me HOURS to polish that bar!!!)

I believe it was scathcart who removed his, and noticed no peeling paint or any other problems from the hood.

I've also heard of folks whose fabric stuff caught fire with an engine fire. I'm pretty sure the fabric's main purpose is noise reduction.

I have mine off... Although I do have my hood undercoated... my fabric was in bad shape, but I wanted heat/fluid/rust protection, so I put rubberized undercoating on it.

this is bulllshit. i hate to hear this bullshit regurgitated from everyone too fortunate to not have had first hand experience with it. the pad WILL NOT stop a fire. my alternator caught fire one time, and the flames must have reached the pad because when i opened the hood THE PAD ITSELF WAS ON FIRE!!! it melted and ran all over everything and would have caught anything else that was flammable under the hood on fire as well if i hadnt been close to home and gotten the hose out in time....so quit regurgitating this bullshit, the pad is made from plastic fibers, they burn as welll as anything else. my only guess as to its purpose would be to keep the hood from getting too hot and reduce noise.

I'm working on removing the sound deadening material on the inside of the car right now, how much do you think that stuff under the hood weights? :P

im sure the stuff does keep heat from under the hood from damaging the paint but when my pd failed all that stuff caught on fire, i dont think its fire retardant. so i duno what will happen if you take it off and drive it everyday, the heat could cause the paint to fade or look bad but i guess that risk is up to you, in most cases fc's paint is faded enough it wont matter. oh yeah it prolly weights 3~4 lbs or less, not very much at all.
