Strange starting problems after doing ATF trick and unflooding

First off, I looked my best using the search engine and couldn't find anything quite like my problem. Here's the deal...

Last wednesday, my car (88 gxl) ran out of gas in my neighborhood...it was sputtering, starting and stopping, you know, just getting the last drops of gas out of the tank (its not my stupidity...the gas gauge works intermittently and I swore I had more gas in there). Well...thursday morning, I was hoping I could start the car, back it out of my driveway, gun it, and coast to the gas station 1000 feet from my house. As I was backing out, it starting sputtering, then stopped, only after running about 30 seconds.

I left town from thursday until today, and today I got a gas can and put a couple of gallons into the tank. I tried starting it hoping that I didn't flood it (I've had this car for 4 months and hadn't flooded it yet) but as soon as I started cranking, the engine was spinning much faster than normal.

So...the gas left in the motor from last thursday until today disolved the oil lining the apex seals and killed compression.

I pulled out the plugs, gave them a good cleaning with some brake cleaner and a wire brush, squirt about 2 or 3 ounces of ATF into each rotor, cranked the motor with no FI fuses in and no plugs for 45 seconds or so (I heard the compression come back), re-installed the spark plugs, and gave it a go.

The car cranked over a few times then started like normal, revved to 3000 RPMs, then immediately died. Next time I tried to start, it was kind of catching but not really and would run for like 1/2 a second. After a few more tries of unflooding and cranking with not a hint of the ability to start, I pulled the plugs and put more ATF in, cleaned the plugs, ran the motor, etc.

Then the same exact thing happened again...it fired up to 3000 RPM's, then immediately died...no modulation of the throttle made any difference.

Before I go and pull the plugs again, does anybody have any advice on how I may cure my woes? Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to give as much detail as possible to see if I missed anything obvious. TIA,
