Strange problem on cold starts...

I am having a really weird problem.

On cold starts (usually mornings when I go to get in my car) I will go out to my car and start it and at first it will rev to about 1500 then it will stall out. After it stalls the first time it will not start again. I turn the key and I can hear my Walbro fuel pump whining but nothing else happens. If I persist for maybe 15-20 tries the car will turn over but make a grinding noise. Few more tries and the car will finally start up. What do you guys think could be causing this problem? After the car starts up and I run it for a while I have no problem starting it up again.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

- Eliot

Can't be. The fuel pump is brand new...upgraded to a Walbro about 2 months ago. Thanks,

sounds like flooding. Bad compression maybe? Do a compression check, if that's ok I'd say the fuel injectors are probably the cause.

Yeah I was actually thinking of that. Maybe the injectors need to be cleaned.

Any other ideas?

could it be spark plugs? (I'm asking, not suggesting)
either dirty, or too the plugs are too cold (build cold, not physically cold)
