Strange Noise when cold
Strange Noise when cold
ok, well this morning in michigan was about 40°F. I went out to start my car up and i heard a sound that sounded like a whine combined with a screeching, kind of like a bad waterpump. when i shut off my engine, as the engine was slowing to a stop, it sounded like a scraping/air whooshing. Like metal to metal contact. could it be my apex seals against the housing? is this normal? im running a little premix along with the MOP. im running 10w40 at he moment. thanks -alex

Check your altenator and Idler pullies, the idler pulley on my PS (the only idler left) has a habit of soundling like that when it wants a shot of grease rammed down its throat, ad it does it a LOT when its cold.
or -related to above-Sounds like air pump creaking to me(no oiling air pump gets creaky with age). Belts are cold as well which will enhance this sound. My air pump made the same sound and replaced belt ...it went away...Belt dressing can cure it too but it ends up sprayed all over bay black spots everywhere.
Of course could be wrong but like I said you are describing the same situation I just had that new belt solved.(could be air pump alignment inproved when I changed the belt as well)

thanks for the replys guys. I forgot to mention i removed all emissions, a/c, and PS. so all thats left is the alt, which is new and the waterpump which is new as well
You might want to recheck you alt. wheel and the belts, I know someone that had the same problem and he just used a smaller belt. Be careful not to overtighten because you will bend the spindle that holds the wheel.
hmmm, if it was the alt or belts, wouldnt it keep making this noise even after it was warm. I know its not belt sqeek, its more of a grinding sound in the engine, the car runs fine, has 4k on the rebuild. i cant think of anything

It sounds like you only have 1 belt on the fan & alternator.
A slipping belt is probably part of the noise.
A dual alternator pulley will give some more grip on the fan.
