Strange noise after shut down...

I've got a noise that reoccurs constantly after shutting my '91 vert off. It's a mechanical humming sound, almost like the fuel pump or something. It lasts 4-5 seconds and stops. After a moment it does it again, then repeats the process numerous times, I haven't hung around long enough to see when or if it finally stops altogether. Any ideas on what it is? Is this normal or should I start to worry?

Hey there!!!

Is the sound coming from the front or the back of the car?

How about the next time you shut it off, lift the hood and check to see if the fan comes on.

Ive got that strange noise too. But its not the fuel pump. I can get it to go away by opening the fuel tank. DOnt know what it is though.

Very funny, StarionX-I think I would know if that was happening. The noise is coming from the rear of the car, and a Mazda mechanic couldn't help me either...

Put your ear up to the fuel pump and check to see if that is the cause. Could be a sticky fuel pump relay, or malfunctioning key switch.

Do you have a power antenna? If so, does it work?

My power antenna works perfectly, but I don't listen to the radio, I always have the CD player going...there aren't many good stations that I can reach where I live. Next time I drive it I'll get on the ground and listen to the gas tank to see if it's coming from there...

If opening the gas cap solves the problem, wouldn't that indicate a problem with the charcoal canister?
