heys guys. i discovered a 1988 FC that had a 6-speed in it. it also had 5 lug GXL wheels, sunroof, manual windows. storage bins. all this dosent really add up. home dude that owned it said that this particular FC had a STOCK 6 speed in it. I was like WTF thats BS. It did have 6 speeds and reverse. non-turbo. he wants $400 for it. fried ECU, good compression, no battery.

Very strange anyone have any comments? might buy it just to have a 6-speed FC

 

That's impossible. Did you actually hit 6th gear? Maybe he just had a 6speed shifter? :P

 

he's making stuff up, like you said he prolly means 5spds + rev = 6 just to make people notice it. no rx7's, even in japan ever got 6spds from the factory. how does an ecu get fried on a s4? s5 ecus get killed when the omp goes. if its got good compression you could prolly sell the motor for more than your picking up the car for. anyways, check it out and see 400 bucks for a car that only needs a few cheap parts is pretty good. and who knows, what if he is telling the truth about the tranny haha.

I think I might try to pick it up, the ecu fried because he hooked a new battery up the wrong way(LOL) the whole 6 speed is kinda neat. my guess is thats its a 6 speed from an old Z28 or maybe a miatia need to check if it has a lsd.

 

ahh i see, i didnt even think about the miata tranny. kinda neat and all but with a na i didnt think a 6spd would do much for it besides have an extra overdrive. anyways thats cool you found that, keep us posted

 

miata tranny is close ratio 5 speed w/ one overdrive, unlike f and y bodies, that have a close ratio 4 speed w/ 2 overdrives

 

6 speed can be done installed for a huge waste of money, a lot of headaches, next to no performance gains, and a slight addition to the "My car is cool" factor.

even if your car had the power to top out 5th gear?

you dont see many 5 speed high dollar cars with some actual power to get to high speed Example: Z06, GTS, ENZO???

do N/A's have the power to max 5th? no...

and to get to the same speed in 6th you need even more power then if in 5th....

and that amount of power would blow up the tranny before you got there.

 

The only six speed tranny I've ever seen for the FC is the HKS dogmissoin and its like $6,000.

 

Its probably a Miata 6speed, which means its a real 6-speed, meaning close ratio 5 speed + overdrive, therefor the same top speed. Most 'supercars' have 1:1 5th gears with an overdrive 6th.

So, once again- you are most likely wrong.

Not that a stock NA FC could even top out the stock drivetrain, yet alone a double-overdrive .6x 6speed....

Just because a car has 6 speeds doesn't mean it'll have a high top speed. 6 speed gearboxes are made for one real reason...to put the first 5 forward gears as close as possible to keep the engine in it's powerband and enhance the acceleration curve (it's what you do when you don't have a crap load of power...it lets you do what you need with less power). While I really wish I had a 6 speed in my FC (personally I with all 7's every generation came with 6 forward gears...we don't make all the TQ in the world and that would cure a lot ) it wouldn't really help top speed by very much...just acceleration (which is a good thing and MUCH more important than top speed).

Btw...how much work is it to put in a Miata 6spd tranny into the FC N/A (S4). Anyone got any experience or links?
