Story - my new 86 GXL

Hi y'all....i have had a first gen for about a year and after doing quite a bit to it decided that the next step was a second gen. Got on autotrader on the net and found the perfect car for me..gxl , 80,000miles appeared in good condition...the guy sold it the same day i called him. A few days later found another one. just about the same characteristics can you believe it the guy sold it the same day. Well getting frustrated with the whole thing. I am in texas and my plan was to fly pick up the car and drive it back so what ever I bought had to be within 12 hour drive and the car had to be in good shape to make it back. Kinda forgot about the whole idea and a few days later to the very end of the autotrader listind found an 86 GXL with 57,000 mile and the add read original miles..yeah right is what i said. besides the car belonged to a dealer. nevertheless decided to call and talk to the dealer. to my surprise a very nice guy the used dealership manager. i asked him if it was original miles and if it was original paint on the car. he read carfax report to me and told me that yes to original paint which according to him was in very good shape. well after talking a bit we agreed on price (3,000) and without thinkin gmuch told him i would send him a check for him to hold the car for me until that next friday when i would fly to get it. got my plane ticket and friday morning came and there i when to buy my 86 GXL on faith because only saw an internet picture and the word of the saleguy. landed in denver at 9:30 am and was at the dealer at 11 more or less. little place off downtown denver. met the guy and he took me to the car. to my surprise everything he said about the car was absolutely true and correct. did not exagerate or make up a picture pretty to sell the car. needless to say it was love at first sight. the paint is all original except for a bit in the back that probably got in to a fender bender. the interior incredibly nice. every power thing works. the dash no cracks. read 57,000 and some miles and after looking at the engine bay and driving the car i can honestly say that pretty convinced it does have 57,000 miles. the manual is was still in the glove compartment with the original paperwork if the original owner. Drove the car and apart that it needs rear shocks cant think of anything else that needs to be done to it. the spare tire new in the back with the black tool bag in its right place. well paid for it and drove it off the lot to go to a service station and have all fluids cheked. when i got to the service station the oils had already been changed incluiding transmission and dif. checked the manual in the glove comp. and it had logged the tune up done with the miles noted and all. ohhhhh there is a parenthesis.....when i first drove the caar with the dealer there in the center console i found a switch (aftermarket) so i asked and he did not know so i played with it and nothing happened so while i was waiting to get taken care of in the service station i played with the switch and in a little later the car quit on me. flat dead. it did not want to start so here i am thinking i am 12 hours away from home and i have a dead car on my hands. an hour past by and nothing. but it did feel like out of fuel so i started checking until finally found what the switch was for......fuel pump on and off. flipped it back the other way and bingo started right up. well the rest of my 12 hour trip went uneventful and had a blast. very happy with my GXL. now to just do some mods and play around with my new toy. just thought i'd share my story with you guys

It took you an hour to realize you should try flipping the switch (the only thing you screwed with to make it die) back the other way??

With thinking like that, I'm not sure a 7 is the car for you. Unless you are lucky and yours never tears up.

Great find, good luck with her, happy rotoring.

Congrats on the find, and good luck with the mods. I got luckey with mine, too. I found it on Ebay, and it turned out it was about 3 blocks down the road (seriously) with exactly what I wanted on it - all the mods listed below.

How much did you pay for yours. Thats a serious list of mods. Yeah you lucked out also and 3 blocks away. I am also in texas - el paso. couldn't find anything in this area for sure had to go to denver but like i said it was worth it. i want to start by putting headers and the RB presilencer. That mod made a big difference in my first gen so it must be worth it in my second gen

I realized my TII had foglights a few days after owning it...I was more happy with the motor than the small things...

This is the long version of the switch. I probably flipped the switch while driving along and then got top the service station parked in line and after a little bit it quit...so kinda forgot about the switch yeah i know should have thought about it immediately but such is life in the desert. that only added to the adventure it was worth it.

I paid $3000 for it. I was actually at A&M at the time, and so was the guy I got it from. Theres some more minor things done to it that arent listed, plus I got several replacement parts that he never got around to installing. After I had it for about 3 months, I was driving it pretty fast and noticed it was over heating. It turned out that the fan clutch went out, plus the rad was clogged, or something. I ended up with a coolant leak in the engine, so I had to get a rebuild. The new engine with streetport was done by me. I got totally fucked over by the first place I went to, so I had to take it Alamo Rotary in San Antonio. I really dont want to go into details cause it pissing me off just thinking about it.

So the first place did a bad job of rebuilding it and then you took it to Alamo Rotary??? So what part of the rebuilding did you do??. I have an 85 with a 12a and thinking of streetporrting the thing. it is not ready for an overhaul just yet but soon i will either put in a 13b street ported or just do my 12 a. tell me is there a considerable difference between your stock 13b to the street ported. I am reading at your mods and it makes me want to have a few dollars extra to start up with mine right away but for now a bit of patience. been doing a lot of investing at work and play money needs to wait.
