Storage Bin to Beer Cooler Conversion?
What do you think it would take to convert one of my storage bins into an ice chest? Please post some ideas.

Well.... just replace the carpet for fiberglass... make your own box out of the stuff. Wouldn't be too bad if you have a small bit of experience.

I was just talking about this to a friend the other day. Anyways, good luck with the conversion. I'd say the easiest thing to do is just run a line to the A/C. But then again, a real fridge would be awesome.

Checker has sold armrest/console mini fridges before.
I guess you could probably take it apart and use it in a hatch bin.
If you make it.
I would guess fiberglass like said above and then Tap a hole at the bottom and run it to the ground as a water/liquid drain.
Then maybe run a second outer shell which a coolant could pass through to chill.
Not really sure on how the mini fridge at checker work.
If you do this don't forget to make some deep socket/dish cup holders in the hatch so you have something to hold them in since the FC doesn;t have any.

Agree.. simply go to Office depot and buy one of those desk fridges.. that hold a 6 pack and a scootch more. Take it apart and out the mechanism in the one bin.. and have the output from the air outlet in the other bin... that has some insulation all around it.. like the yellow foam in a can. Spray some in... carve it to the shape.. some light fiberglass work.. and a little gel coat..... air inlet from the other bin.. and seal the lid down.. Run a DC to AC inverter from Harbor Freight.. and voila Instant Fridge Bin.

FYI- one of those cheap little 6 pack coolers or car mini fridges are just 12v peliters.
Its a ceramic heat exchanger that when current is applied, one side becomes very cold, the other VERY hot.
Meaning you need to provide an exscape for this heat being created.
I bet most are just around 20watts- and only need a very small fan to cool the heat created.
Good insulation for both the cold and hot sides are the key to letting these work.
Also what needs to be considered is the condensation that causes ICE- meaning you need to have a drain tube at the lowest spot.
So basicly the cooler unit needs to be placed on the side, and drain pan at the bottom. Hot air and water created must be externaly vented.

1.3L is not that small
whats the point of this? if you think about it... its pointless to wire up a fridge.. every time you turn the car off the motor on the fridge stops and as a result the fridge gets hot just like the rest of the car... if you make 10 hour drives regualarly then i can understand cause after 4 or 5 hours the fridge might actually cool a soda... otherwise a continuous power source of a fridge would eat up your battery in a matter of minutes... and being a rx7 i sincerely doubt you make lots of long drives... spend your money elsewhere, otherwise make a fiberglass box and when on LONG drives pile it full of ice and soda

So you ask what good is it? I CLEARLY see a use for it in our area EVERY Friday and Saturday.
If YOU dont have that much seat time on occation doesnt mean others do not..
Today.. with a Wife and Kids and too many projects.. I dont have a use for it. On a Trip? Yes.. But I dont drive for hours all over anymore.. I just go to the races and watch if I go anymore LOL
I play on the track nowadays

Umm 2 Story.. "3 Car" garage... actually it is jsut a tad over TWICE the square footage of my house.
And there are cars outside....
Currently INSIDE.. is my 91, I am finishing putting the Wolf 3.x in it with a stock motor for a daily driver, EvilAviators 3 Rotor (The manifold is on his car) and the 10th Annie TII that is waiting for the rest of the exhaust, and the clutch master and slave so I can tune it other than spending the original 10 minutes to power it up and make it breathe fire with no load.
The rest are outside Under car covers.. the Vert has the carport.
(I also have a Long Bed Extd Cab 4x4 Chevy truck, and a Geo Prizm 4 door the wife uses to cart the kids to school)

Nice thinking!
A more practical way would be to just insulate the box and put ice in it. (basically a stationary cooler) You could even have a drain plug in the bottom!
I've done ice in my spare tire well before to keep things cold at events. (I have also have grilled hotdogs on my heat shield).

I did this once in my other FC. I had an SE and I put neoprene in as a liner. All I did was use dry ice. Cut the neoprene to fit around and put a piece on the inside of the lid too. It did not keep it cold forever but it really worked fine for what I needed. I used to drive my SE a lot so I would keep my Mountain Dew in there--use the passenger side so you can reach it while driving easier. Kinda ghetto I guess but hey it worked
