Cool, three wrong answers...

Stock max boost for a S4 is 6.56psi as per page 4B-9 of the FSM. S5 is 8.25psi (page F2-9). This is for a stock car in mint condition, of which none exist any more. Clogged cats and tired turbos will mean stock cars don't boost this high any more, but modded cars will have no trouble getting higher.

Read what it says on the gauge. It's calibrated in tens of mmHg, so "40" is 400mmHg or 7.7psi. Stock max boost is about 340mmHg, so your boost is normal.

If you have modified or are planning to modify your car, you should get an eftermarket gauge. The stock gauge is useless for taking precise readings, particularly if you're past the top of the scale.
