MB Stinky cats

I just bought a 1988 convertible in Hamilton, Ontario, and drove it home to Manitoba.
Now and again I could smell something whenever I accellerated. I showed the car to a friend who deals in used RX7 parts and as soon as he opened the hood he said the catalytic converters were plugged.
I want to keep the exhaust system as standard as possible, replacing the cats with Mazda parts is prohibitively expensive, so what to you guys suggest? Replacing the cats with resonators? Aftermarket cat? Someone suggested a 3 way cat, what is that?
I definitely want to keep the exhaust volume where it is, I had enough trouble getting a 85 GSL-SE with a RB header to stop giving me headaches.
So advice, please,
Mike

By a High Flo Cat.Get rid of the PreCats, and just Run the one high Flo.Even with Just ONE cat,the car when properly tuned will pass Etest..If you Can't Find a high Flo,Search through Racing Beat or Mazdatrix website..Also Believe it or Not you can get a Fairly Good Cat at Canadian Tire.Get one that would normally be used on say a 4.3 or a v8 Application. As long as the Split air tube is on the cat,you shouldn't have Problems with your auxilary Ports opening..By the Way,If the Car doesn't "smell" it ain't an RX7!(Rx7's with Exhaust mods will gas ya out.I almost get Headaches!..heh.But I love it!).
