still problems after cold-solder "fix"
A couple of weeks ago, i had my CPU re-soldered because of a few malfunctions in my car. for example. the biggest problem was the IP lights never worked, so i put in a new headlight switch-box. the IP lights worked for about 3 or 4 days before they went out again. also, the clock and the windshield wipers have intermitent problems. the dome lights don't work and the rear hatch light sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.
please note that i had a friend of mine, who is an electical engineer re-solder the CPU, so i am certain he did a good job. please tell me what to do. this is becoming a real nuisance.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Cold solder joints in circuit boards is a cronic problem with 2nd Gens. You just keep attacking them individually re-soldering as the case calls for. Sooner or later you'll get em all. Nuisance in the mean time, but nothing that should put your care out of commission.
Switch's, conversly, usually only get dirty contacts over time which only calls for taking them out and clean with a pencil erasor or lite grit sand paper or file.
My guess is you have a power source problem common to all of the lights you mention.
FD3S.org has an '88 Mazda shop manual you can access online so long as your computer has Adobe Reader. This resourse has to be the most valuable I've seen online. Again, cudos to you Dave.
Go to the schematic section at the back and find the section that deals with interior lights. Find all these things you mentioned and trace back until you find a common point then look there.
My guess is you have a switch or connector connection problem somewhere.
Good luck.

Be careful with the re-soldering bit. Not only did Mazda have a poor soldering process, but the PCBs are of poor quality. I found some lifted pads in my wiper unit that caused the intermittent wiper portion to fail - it wasn't the standard relay problem. Make sure you use a low-watt iron, and don't hold it for too long or else you'll be lifting some pads as well.

Th wiper switch and clock are definately their own soldering projects. The wiper switch typically needs a new relay soldered in and the clock needs a similar treatment that the CPU got.

Alternatively, just replace the Logicon. Its easy to remove and replace, just a couple screws. I see them all over the pull you own parts wrecking yards out here. Fairly inexpensive.

try cleaning the connections for your dome lights and rear hatch light. they can get dirty sometimes and cause poor connections. i know, because the previous owner of my car was a chronic smoker. i'm still vacuuming cigarette ashs and smoke out of my car and i'll probably never get it all.
