Luckily I found you guys about a couple months ago because many of you are the reason why my RX-7 is still on the road. I had a very bad fuel odor along with a bad idle. In about 20 minutes I had about 5 replies telling me to replace my Pulsation Damper. I did just that and everything seems fine. When I pulled the old one out, the screw was popped and the cap was severly cracked. The only problem is that I can still smell a small hint of fuel when the car sits in idle. I know that a lot of fuel was sprayed on my engine when the PD went bad but I thought the smell would have burned off by now! I have checked the part to see if it is leaking and everything seems fine. Another weird thing is that when the PD went up, I would open the hood and the smell would be so strong that I would have to let it air out before I could put my face close enough to see it. Now when I open the hood I dont smell one hint of fuel at all!! Its like the only place where it smells is inside the car. Could the fuel smell be trapped in the vents?? or in the fabric inside the car?? Its the only thing that I can come up with. Let me know if you have heard anything like this from people who have replaced their PD.

My guess would be it is just the exhaust smell that you smell, and it is coming up through the area around your shifter. You smell it when you are idling because it comes straight up through there, but when you are moving, it all blows out behind so you don't notice it.

Also, chk your PCV if the hoses are attached and Char. Canister...it might be cracked.

Did you change ALL your fuel lines? Did you replace all your o-rings and insulators?

I checked my charcoal canister and it is not cracked. I did replace the gaskets but not the fuel hoses. I was able to get all of the hoses off without splitting or cracking so I figured they would be alright. But I have gone back and rechecked everything to make sure nothing was loose, leaking, or cracked and everything is just fine. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the exhaust which AreExSeven had mentioned. My exhaust system needs to be replaced in a major way, I just have not gotten around to getting that done yet. I just cant be too careful when I start to smell exhaust/fuel fumes because of what happened a few months ago. I just want to be on the safe side. I am lucky that my car is still on the road!!

Try putting a jumper on the yellow connector located on the passenger's side. It should be near the shock tower, sort of underneith your boost/pressure sensor (turbo??? or na????) the yellow connector may be under a few things.

Then turn your key to on. this will pressurize the rail. Let it sit for a while. come back and check things out for fuel smell. since you smell, then you should smell. But if you do not smell then you have nothing really to worry about.

You can take this stuff further and remove the upper intake again and do this test at the yellow jumper once more. Then you will be able to inhale fumes directly from the fuel rails (sounds like fun).

once you jump that yellow connector here's some stuff to check.
1)both vacuum lines on the top of the charcoal cannister hooked up? on of these goes right to the gas tank
2)gas cap tight? my fd gas cap went bad and it gave the same symptoms of a bad pd
3) how about the o rings on the injectors themselves? sometimes you wrenching on the rail can disturb them if they are old
4) i have seen fuel injectors leak externally; both thru the connector where the pins come out but alos where the plastic meets the metal.
5) loose hose clamp on the fuel line?

I was going to say leaking injectors in my last post but the thread starter did not indicate the motor had a problem starting. Perhaps after jumping the yellow pin for a while the motor will flood. I guess flooding or running rich could be another sorce of fuel smell.

Its not my injectors because we checked those while replacing the PD. I figured if I had the **** pulled apart I might as well check some other stuff while I was at it. I really have a feeling that it is the exhaust fumes that I am smelling.

Dude,
Have you recently replaced the brake booster hose? Theres a one-way valve in it that can cause a smell under boost if missing.

Or:
Check the one-way valve (the only metal one) the goes to the canister under the elbow.
