Stick it to the road!.......

i want my car to stick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am looking at new rims and tires for my 87 gxl and i dont really care too much about how they look (i do but they could be black for all i care)

my question is: i am looking at some 17 x7s that will take up to 245 tires. i want the widest tires i can get and i dont mine putting spacers in their but i dont have coilovers. is this too wide for the car? and if not, how wide can i go (i want mean traction!)

Justin

d00d, if you wantz MAD TRAKSHUN...

first, make sure you NEED it. The higher the coeff. of friction, the slower you're going to accelerate. Mostly because when you go to do a sooper-dooper launch, you're going to have to COOK your clutch, because your wheels SURE as **** ain't gonna break loose.

next, if you're SURE you REALLY want that much grip, talk to your local autox guys and get some 13x10in or 13x11in wheels. No, they won't look as cool, but you're after traction, not looks, right?

OK... well, 15" is small as you can go on GXL and fit over your 4pist. calipers. But it is true lighter rims will give you more cornering traction as it be less work for your suspension to keep pressed against the pavement over bumps; you will have less accelerating traction because more engine power gets to the road faster. Rim width will provide better traction in both cornering and accelerating due to a improved contact patch even when comparing same width tires. Good, soft tires are the key to traction (example-I found 245 nitto 450s have less traction than 205 pirelli p7s-both on 7" rims); I wouldn't consider a tire w/ treadwear over 200 for my TII. So the 17x7 aren't that great since they will weigh alot (unless they are $$ forged alum.) and aren't very wide. Do a search on "widest tires on FC" as it comes up alot, and remember wide tires in the rear will make your sportscar understeer like a FWD economy car. Don't forget suspension-it will help both cornering and acceleration and is often overlooked.

you would be better off getting some good tires for your stock rims and putting the rim money into shocks/springs or bushings, strut bars, sway bars, etc. having bigger rims wont make much difference with the same tires. and you can't go more then 225 in the front anyways without rubbing.

ok firsty of all,
No7yet, where did you crawl out of. everything you said was wrong. did you just get out of 8th grade physics? i am sorry but when i hear someone butcher info that bad i have to say something, the coefficient of friction (the larger it is) will only make your car take off better without spinning the tires. stop watching drag races where they have soft wall tires and start watchin course races. a thirteen inch rim may keep your go kart glued firmly to the pavement around curves but not a 2600 pound car. and the thinner the the side wall, the better the cornering (to an extent of course)

ok on with the regular stuff (sorry bout that guys but it just irritated me )

i do plan on getting lightweght aluminum racing rims because if i am gonna spend money on something as expensive as rims... i am gonna get the good ones. and i already have plans for suspension.

i think that handling and safety should come before the power what i want to know is how wide will fit on the front. since i dont want much wider rear tires

thanks
Justin

ps sorry about the rip but i fell it was neccessary

i think what the dude meant was that if you get 17x7's...your car will be slower......which it will! i put 17x7's on my n/a and although it was nothing to get pissed about...the car was a tad slower. i agree with scott...unless you wanna go with the bling bling looks just save up for some suspension upgrades, and a very good set of tires. i love my rims and it certainly made the car handle better...but not as much as better struts and springs would...

ok i know that a bigger rim weighs more but how much more can a 5 spoke aluminum rim weigh. it isnt like the stock 15's on the car are lightwieght.

plus i think 60 series is too much sidewall if i wanna pull some good g's

and believe me i am not gonna blow 1500 dollars on rims until i have the right suspension. i just need to know what to look for

Justin

ps. if he was just saying that 17 are heavier i wouldnt have said anything but he is saying that if i get too much traction i will burn my clutch up trying to start off. anyone that is stupid enough to burn their clutch up because their tires are too good shouldnt be allowed to drive. the whole message was just stupid

if you have a weak clutch with really good tires you will burn the clutch out faster then if you had decent or crappy tires while trying to lanch hard.

as in don't run slicks on the drag track unless you have an upgraded clutch.

exactly,

you would have to be an idiot to run a shitty clutch with drag tires. or do anything of that sort
