Just unscrew the retaining nut most of the way (leave at least a couple threads on) and pull. The few threads left will help prevent you from hitting yourself when it pops off.

In worst case, rapidly pull the wheel back or rock it side to side while pulling back.

Why i work at the body shop just made one up. u use like a long bolt and you put the bolt through a peice of metal. the use grips ro hold it on the slow screw the bolt and it will pop off. I dont think you got any clue what i am talking about hard to explain if you seen it you would understand. good luck

Definatly leave the nut on a little bit like Icemark said. I didnt' do that when I took my wheel off and I smaked myself in teh face pretty f-ing hard.

Pulling straight back usually does nothing.

Like Icemark said - leave the nut on and rock the wheel side to side. After a few rocks, the wheel will loosen up and come right off.

I must take a different stance. You probably will be able to remove the wheel by pulling, tugging, shaking, but why take any chances on these "old" cars. Use a steering wheel puller, that's why they make them. A cheapo will probably cost $10/15 and you'll have it off in no time, plus have it to use again. I'm sure you could rent, or get a loaner from the parts store. I had a 10AE and wanted to remove the wheel. I was going to get rid of it when done, so I did the above. Never came off. Walked into garage and got puller. Off in 2 minutes.

make sure that when you put it back on you don't torque on to tightly. I did this and broke a sensor, now everytime I start my car i get this annoying beeping pattern.

Oh and I forgot, before you pull it, if you are putting it back on afterwards, get a magic marker and draw a line on the shaft and matching line on the steering wheel.

That will help you re-install the wheel back in the correct position.

When I got mine, the previous owner had the wheel off before and reinstalled it a couple teeth off, so I had to go reset it. I could not get it off without a wheel puller.

I removed several stock steering wheels on the rx-7. Best thing to do is to use a Club and torque the handles up, down, left, right and the wheel should come loose. My two cents.
