Steering Wheel removal

I know I know, I'm probably going to get flamed for it... but I'm seriously having a problem removing the steering wheel. I alreadyremoved the horn and the nut, but the steering wheel still won't come off the shaft. what am I missing? i don't see any corrosion holding it on, but it's still as solid as it ever was. anyone think of what i'm missing?

Step 1: Put the nut back on the end of the shaft so you don't bust your face.

Step 2: Yank on that thing like crazy alternating the position you are pulling from like: Top, bottom, top, bottom. Try not to smack yourself in the face when it breaks loose.

If that doesn't work you can go loan a wheel puller from autozone. but the first way is easier imho.

Go to any auto parts store and buy a puller, as shown for steering wheel removal in the Haynes manual (p245).

Or thread the nut back part way back on and pull very hard...

also you can try hitting the end of the shaft with a dead blow hammer till the wheel pops loose but make sure to use a dead blow or a piece of wood to not mushroom the shaft.

If you dont wanna damage things go and get a puller, if you wanna risk it then just pull on it till it comes loose and breaks your nose

This solves your problem right there...
so long as you leave the nut on and tighten it a couple of turns there is still plenty of room for to free the steering wheel, and there is no need to worry about hitting yourself.

step 1-make sure your wheels are 100% straight
step 2-mark the position of the gearing
step 3-thread the nut 2-3 turns and rock the wheel back and forth a few times like your whole body is turned into an impact wrench
step 4-reinstall with the correct markings and test drive to ensure it is straight

man, i did this myself a while ago for my fc, a long *** time ago for my datsun. just take everything off, rethread the nut a little, and whale ******* hell on the steering wheel, assuming you arent going to reuse it or resell it. im lucky, cause im a big guy and a wrestler, so, it was mediumly difficult for me, surprisingly, the datsun was easier (wtf?)
just a suggestion
p.s. the pullers are useless, be a man and use your hands, not the ***** way (plus its cheaper my way)

peace

Well... I am planning on re-using it. The other steering wheel is pretty much dead look and feels wise, and I don't have the cash flow to put out for an after market or re-opolstering job. So I'll try yankin' on it again, but in about a week or so I'll probably just go buy a puller and be done with it.

well, if a wrestler has a pretty face, he's not a wrestler right?

Thanks for all the input. I never thought a simple removal would get this much information. Go figure.
