Question Is the steering column surround different for a vert?

I need to buy a new steering column surround for my vert, but someone told me that the verts were different than the normal FC's. Maybe because of the airbag, but anyways, I need to know if there is in fact a difference.

yes there are differences, there is a lever for cruise control on verts that is not present on coupes. coupes have the cruise control on the black gauge surround. thats all i can think of off the top of my head, they are different but i duno if you can just modify a coupes or not.

The 'verts have the cruise on the opposite side of the gauge surround like another turn indicator. The steering column surround itself is identical (I have one of each, a Jspec coupe surround and a US 'vert surround and they are identical).

Wait a minute here. Driftfc, like you I have a '90 vert as well as a '90 GXL. The steering colum cowlings are completely different. Examples: Vert cowling (top) is about 8 1/2 inches wide while the GXL's is about 4 3/4, The cruse control is not on the opposite side on verts it is on the right as it is on coupes only it is mounted out of the cowling. Also, the headlight controls are mounted on the instrument surroung face on coups but like the cruse control comes off the column cowling on the verts.

I suggest you verify the part number differences.

The 90-91 verts with airbag have a different steering column surround than the coupes and 88-89 verts. It is radically different so I am not sure what DigitalSynthesis is saying.

They even have different part numbers http://www.mazdatrix.com/in-colmn.htm

WITH AIRBAG is the diff... I don't have one in my 'vert, and I noted mine was an '89. The '89 'vert steering surround AND gauge surround is identical to the coupes... I know, because I have coupe surround installed in my 'vert now because the 'vert one was broken.

Now airbags... I can't comment on. But I clarified that I have an 89 'vert. Which I believe means by definition no airbag.

When I said "opposite side" I meant opposite the turn signal on the gauge surround same as coupes. As opposed to on the steering column surround as the misguided ajsuper7 said, which it is not. That is all.

All I know is what I have. An '89 'vert, without airbag. And I'm using coupe surrounds (JDM coupe surrounds, even) for the steering column and I have the JDM surround for the gauge cluster which is also the same as my 'vert one.

Sorry if that confused anybody... I thought I was pretty precise.

The difference is the airbag, apparently. Not the 'vert. Unless the 'verts have a different airbag setup from the coupes, which I cannot comment on.

Ah ok.. further comment. I did not know that coupes did not have the airbag option available... I thought that they had them in the same years as the 'verts did. That was my mistake. Still, the difference is the airbag, if your 'vert has it. If not, then its the same, as I intended to say.

No you didn't... you said:

Nothing about an 89 there...

Your comments were simply wrong for this guy and you may have cost him both money and time.

Please don't answer if you don't know... guessing helps no one.

Sorry I thought my sig had posted!

Geez man I was trying to help. And I DO know. I have one! I just don't have an airbag and didn't notice he did. Sorry! And they ARE identical, if there is no airbag involved!
