Steering column cover screws

Hello fellow rotary owners,

I recently bought new steering column covers (no airbag) due to the previous owner utterly destroying the screw holes, making the covers hang lifelessly off of the steering column. There are no screws in any of the screw holes and the haynes repair manual doesn't state what size or type of screws I should use. Before I go buy a gaggle of different types and sizes, could someone let me know what type and size are in theirs?

Thanks a bunch.

The top has no screws..it snaps in.
the bottom 2 screws closest to the seat will screw into the signal assembly plastic. There is another longer screw just past the ignition that screws into a tab in the steering column I believe.

I get a picture of them but they look like standard screws for the most part from what I have on my car are three countersunk type screws and one what looks to be a machine thread finish screw to attach the top piece. Hope this helps

That'll help a little since I do have the pointed one. It fell out from somewhere a while back and now seeing it, I know where it came from. I can then use that to find the other ones just by comparison.

The other guy mentioned a longer screw, is the pointed one the longer he is referring to? I would imagine that the two closer to the seat would be the same screw.

One last thing, would you say that the two screws in your photo are relatively the same width and threading?

Thank you

The previous owner is probably like me, somewhat tall. When you are somewhat tall, your right knee has a tendency to accidentally whack the steering column cover when getting into the car. The plastic also having the durability of peanut brittle doesn't help.

While unlikely, I won't say it isn't possible...I have seen some crazy tall Japanese people, but the majority are the same height as I am, or shorter. I'm 5'7". But yeah it is possible. Just seems more like he pulled on it so hard that he broke the part where the screw would hold it into the steering column.

the Mazda part numbers are 9986-20-516B and 9983-30-512B, not sure about the quantity of each one, the 516's are the same as the ones that hold the sunvisors, so i think 2 of those?

I realize this is 3 years old at this point, but wanted to thank Gregory and j9fd3s. I ordered a new shroud and screws years ago, only to just now get around to trying to install in my jalopy. Once I saw the countersunk screws I was sure I had ordered the wrong parts!
