Unhappy starting problems, please help??

i have a 1987 turbo II, when i go to start the car it will rev up and shut right off. i have no throttle at all, after about a dozen times it will finally catch and let me have some throttle to keep it running. does this sound like my tps sensor could be bad since i am getting no throttle, please someone help me before i order a new tps.

Sounds like the switch in the air fuel meter not making contact. You can prove this one way or the other. Prior to trying to start next time, get a piece of wire with both ends bare. Jumper the fuel check connector near the right front strut tower, close to the boost/pressure sensor. Its yellow in color with perhaps a piece of black rubber covering it. Two sockets. Jumper them. That plug bypasses the switch in the afm. Now start the car. No troubles? Then its the sw in the afm. Still bad? I've no idea right now.

Here is a schematic:

See the CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY?????? See the wire with the *B* and an arrow at the end? And how the words say something about the AIRFLOW METER??? When the car starts, the switch in the afm closes and puts a ground on the wire described above. That in turn pulls the CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY in and makes a circuit to the FUEL PUMP!

It could be a bad CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY also, or a bad ground, or a bad connection or a...........

Not very likely(the tps). Could just be the plug on afm is not on good or has a touch of corrosion on the pins.

I'll rethink that tps. If the jumper does nothing, you could try to just disconnect the tps's plug and start the car and see what happens. That would eliminate any influence a bad tps would have.

Just in case you did not know it: when the key is turned to START, the circuit opening relay will pull in and make a circuit to the fuel pump. But, when you let the key go from START to ON, that circuit goes away, but the air flow meter's flap is now making the switch in the afm putting a ground on the circuit opening relay thereby keeping it pulled in and the pump running.
