Starting problems!

hey all

recently my 88 turbo II started having some hard starting problems, until the starter stopped working, i would bang it with a hammer and it fired up no problem. I replaced the starter and it started one time. Since then it just seems to try and start but wont turn over. Also everyonce and a while when i turn the key it does nothing, i wait and it will try and start again but not turn over. Im about to take the starter back out and bench test it but was wondering if there is anything else i should be looking at. Before all this started happening i should tell you one night i flipped my lights on and the car died but then it started up no problem. Then the starter died the same night.

Any ideas would be welcome

thanks

Yes i flicked on the lights and the whole car died. but started back up .. the alternator is charging however not at idle but at about to 2000 rpm its working, so i know the alternator is slightly underpowered, but the battery is solid and the only problem it was having was the starter. When i hit it with a hammer it started right up, and when i tested power to the starter it was getting power but not turning over unless i banged the starter. Thats what led me to replace the starter, with the new one in i got it started one time, took a good 10 min of trying though. But since then nothing! 9 out of ten times it trys its *** off to turn over but wont then the 10th time my key does nothing, no noise, no click nothing, wait a few min and it trys its *** off again. The new starter seems to be working when tested. Battery is good and alt my not be great but its wokring also.

Frustrated and confused. Any other ideas?

Thanks

if the alternator is only charging at Hi revs, check the belt tension. If the belt is loose the alternator won't charge up properly, and that can give you all sorts of headaches.
