Starting Problems

Hey Guys, here is some history on the car and the problem I'm having. My bestfriend' father has owned the car for about 6 years. Kept very good care of it and never raced it or drove it hard. (55 year old guy). Anyways, My friend bought him a convertiable for fathers day, so I bought his old car, which is an 88 n/a.

I started the car up daily to let it run for a little bit before I bought it, then after buying the car I drove it home with no problems. I drove the car a couple of times afterwards and I saw that it started to overheat. I turned the car off right away and pulled over to the side of the road. I noticed the hose had a crack in it. So I let the car cool down for about an hour, put more water in it, and drove it back to my house (which was just a few blocks).

After replacing the hose, and letting the car sit for the day; the car would start up fine, at least it did once. I started the car, drove it to 7-11, parked it, turned the car off, bought food, got back in car, tried starting it but it would just not run. Engine would spin over and over again. It sounded like it was firing, but would crank up all the way.

I let the car sit at the 7-11 untill the next morning and went back over there, and the car started up, but I noticed now that it would not idle. Anytime I let off the gas or come to a stop sign, the car would want to turn off.

I took the plugs out, and oh boy where they screwed. Replaced them and the wires. I had my friend come and check out the car and he did get it started, but the only way he did it was pulling a relay like wire out from under the dash, he cranked the motor over untill it sound like it was going to start, then once he plugged it back it, it fired right up.

I think he said it was a fuelpump relay of some sort. Anyways, it sounded like a injector was stuck in the open position. The injector would 'hiss' when the key is in the on position. We unpluged the mass airflow metter, and the 'hissing' went away. Si I pluged in another mass airflow meter I had, and no more 'hissing' but I can't get it to start up now.

Remember the car ran for 6 years with no problems and the engine was rebuilt in 1998. The car also has great compression. We changed plugs and wires, I removed the EGI fuse as stated in the FAQ thread. Any other ideas what could be the problem?

ATM: The engine will just sit there and spin, now it doesn't sound like its trying. (maybe cause of this Mass airflow meter). Any help would be great! Thanks

Okay, alittle update. I had my friend come over again today and the engine just spins over and over. Doesn't even sound like it's trying anymore. Heres the werid part. We wanted to check to see if there was spark coming from the coils, so I took all 4 plugs off the coils, and placed them right next to the coil openings. (to see if spark was acually being produced). Well, there was spark coming from all of them, but the damm car started!

The car will start if the plugs are just next to the coils, but won't even try if the plugs are inside all the coils. Another friend said to try the ATF trick with the sparkplug holes and the intake. I'm not sure yet, what do you guys think?
