starting problems

i have a 86 n/a and within the last week, i had to have the starter replaced, new plugs put in, and cracks in my exhaust welded. so now that i'm still having starting problems i'm alittle mad. since i have gotten my car back, within the last two days i have had problems with it turning over. its sounds like it wants to, but cant. then i end up popping the hood and pullin the second from the top fuse under the hood, an egi fuse, and go through the steps as if it was flooded and then it starts up, but barley. it seems like it almost dies but then doesnt. now i dont even know if i have to pull the fuses or not, but i have been cause thats what seems to work, except this last time when i had to repeast like 3 times to get it to run. does anyone know what the hell the problem is? or better yet what i can do to solve it.i dont think i have bad compression or anythign because the car seems to run strong when its running. please help.

Hey hows it going

I'd say first check the battery to make sure its up to par. Second you said you replaced the starter make sure all of the connections are good.

If your still having problems send me a PM Maybe I can give you a hand with things.

yeah, i think im going to try that tomorrow. also i want to try some fuel injector cleaner or something. it seems like once it starts if i turn the car off and restart it it has no problems, but i'll let you know if it is still giving me problems. i want to change the oil too incase gas is mixed with that, but i dont know if that would give me any problems.

Have you checked/changed your plugs? Possible problems that cause hard starting/flooding. Lack of tune up, low compression, clogged/leaky injectors..

oh man, its been freezing up here. the plugs were just changed this past week, when i had the starter replaced. so i was thinking about it being the injectors. how can i tell if they are leaky or clogged? as for the low compression, wouldnt that effect the engine while the car is running? i mean i suspose the injectors would too, but i dont see any change in speed, or anything. infact the few times i had the problem if i turned the car off and tried again it would start right up. it only seemed to give me problems if i let it sit for a couple hours or so. im so lost...

Just a little off the wall, but try it anyway. Once started and running, go to your lead coil assy. Gently pull one of the plug wires out of the coil assy and see if its crackling and sparking. You might want to do this in a gentle manner, just edging the plug wire up out of the bore and very slowly lift the wire up out of the bore. Acutually don't lift it all the way out. Just out about a quarter inch or LESS will do. Just a check to see if your Leads coil is working.

You won't get shocked if you keep the wire within a quarter inch of the bore. So take heed to lift/pull gently so you can keep the wire close to the bore. It's well worth doing and won't cost you a thing.

Don't worry about the trail plug/coil. It's not worth thinking about.
