Are 87-88 starters identical to 89-91 starters??

 

ok, just got my starter out and compared it with the newer model starter......they are not identical however the gear seems to be in the same spot on both starters...will the new starter work?

 

Lemme guess, in the old 88 starter, you can't really "see" the teeth, right? Cuz they retract into this sleeve, and in the 91, the teeth are visible all the time?

I did that swap last week. Took out my 88 starter in put in something from an S5, I believe. Yeah, it will work fantasitically.

 

Exactly the differences i noticed, it works, and it does work well..
