starter rebuild (brushes)

Did a search and everybody on here was saying that brushes wheren't avaliable, the brush and holder assembly is avaliable from napa part # ECH e512 about $20. In my case the rest of the starter works perfect and I am cheap so.....

Yeah thanks man, like I said some people are scared to rebuild them, but on mine with 170,000 on the starter the bearings are perfect as is the stater so to me I had rather put the brushes in it.

Bearings are avaliable, you would have to take a mic and mic them and order them by size, but that is no biggie. For most people it might not be worth it, for me I have rebuilt several starters and know how to inspect/replace everything from the bearings to the drive gear so..... To me money saved is a good thing. From the looks of this starter I will get another 100,000 out of it with new brushes, I will post pictures later, but there is a teardown rebuild in the shop manuel I think.

Dunno why people think the brushes would be hard to get. I tried three places (to compare prices) and they all had them in stock. They're probably a common part for ND starters in lots of other cars.

There's only one bearing, and the starter gets so little running time they last for ages. As long as it turns smoothly there's no need to replace.

Teardown and rebuild is pretty easy just using the FSM and paying close attention to how it comes apart.

yea, i've rebuilt my turbo starter, and just used the end-cap and brushes from my NA starter (which was just sitting in the garage), and it worked fine. Im sure there are plenty of other brushes out there that would work just as well too.
