OK, so I have an 87 GXL that I have put back on the road. Clutch, Paint, some exhaust, some electronics, fixed the A/C (R152a, Yeah!) .

The car developed an intermittent starting problem. I checked out the security bypass, but I determined the problem was definitely the starter. It subsequently tested bad at Orielly's on the tester.

The starter had apparently developed a dead spot in the windings. Basically if the starter stopped in that spot, it wouldn't crank. If it stopped anywhere else, the starter worked fine. Russian Roulette.

It works....sorta.

This reman starter spins the engine quite a bit slower than the previous starter. The battery is good, I put new cable clamps on etc, but still the 'new' starter still spins the engine significantly slower than the previous starter. Enough slower that I now have to use an existing fuel cut switch to get the car to start. It acts flooded, but it really is not flooded. the starter simply does not spin very fast.

Comparing the cranking speed with the new starter to the old starter and to the starter in my S5, the speed is probably 20% slower.

Does anyone have experience with different brands of starters? I am considering buying a Bosch reman from a different source. Again any experience or guidance with this would be appreciated.

I bought a 100% new constructed unit from autopartswarehouse that worked great. I only stopped using it because I switched to a turbo trans.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if that starter is bad. I got my TII starter from advance autoparts. Their Worldwide brand with Lifetime warranty. Spins nice and strong. (I used to work at advance for few years and every once in a while you get a bad reman starter that the people rebuilding them must have been sleeping or drunk when putting them together.)

I am positive this "Ultima" comes from the same place that makes the "Worldwide" starter. All auto parts source their parts from the same sources for the most part...

Call them up tomorrow, ask them to order you another one. When it arrives exchange it for the new one or just go to advance and order from them. They shouldn't make a big deal out of it since I am sure they have bad ones come in once in a while too... Hey that's what the lifetime warranty is for right????

 

Thanks for the input. I just picked up another replacement starter. The guy at the counter was pretty willing to help me out with the trouble.

I will post up if the new starter fixes the issue or if there is further trouble.

Final resolution:

The warranty replacement starter (for the replacement starter) turned the motor over just as fast as the original starter on the car. The car starts first time, every time.

Bottom line: I got a very weak defective starter and the motor acted flooded. I could start the motor with a fuel cut switch, but not with out the switch. I used the lifetime warranty, got another starter which worked just fine.
