Starter issue - Hit to make it work

Searched around but couldn't really find any information on it. I've been having issues as of yesterday where my starter wont turn over at all unless I get under the car and hit it with something (I've been using my jack handle). Then it'll work fine for a while.

Basically, do I need a new starter, or is it possible that something else is causing this to happen (doubt it). If it's any help, the temperatures here have gone up quite a bit lately. Thanks!

EDIT: Just searched again and found a bit of info. Looks like it's probably the solenoid. Should I try and clean it up or is it worthwhile to just replace? Thanks.

The starter brushes. Replace the brushes. They're worn to a nub. Thirty bucks from NAPA.

HAILERS is right. Don't hit the starter with a hammer anymore either. You might knock the magnets loose and ruin it.
