Thumbs up Started pulling the engine on my project...Pics(no 56k)

Alright I started to work on my Rx-7 today after work. I'm trying to get the engine pulled so I can start to rebuild.

Here she is... dirt and all

One thing major problem... but we can fix it... I think

Start of work...

Radiator, Fan Shroud, and Fan, removed and some other junk disconnected.

BTW... what is the liquid in the the subzero starting assist bottle?

ALWAYS wash a car before beginning any major project.

that dent sucks...if i were you i'd just straighten it out, primer it, and get a set of sideskirts that will cover it up.

subzero liquid is supposed to be 90% water, 10% ethelyne glycol (antifreeze)

More pictures...

My buddy and I got alot of things disconnected but there is alot of stuff that still has to come out/ be disconnected before we can start to lift it out...exhaust, drain the tranny, drive shaft, oil cooler lines, fuel lines, power steering(?), take the shifter off that kinda stuff... but we got pretty far for about 2 hours of work:

Am I going to need to put the rear up on jack stands to get at the back of the exhaust and the drive shaft?

I'm going to thank rotary resurrection for the instructions on how to pull the engine... it has been a valuable guide with the pics along with the text... its sitting on the windshield in some of the pics.

Antifreeze and water. It's a useless device, just block the fitting on the intake manifold and remove it.

Why do I need to wash it? Its going to get repainted any way.

As far as the dents go... the drivers fender is going to be replaced and for the rocker panel... my uncle(works at a body shop) is going to section(or help me section) a new piece of metal in.

Good luck, You look like you on the right track. You have a nice palce to work, and it sounds like you have plenty of support in your family. Those piston heads will creep over to watch you build your Rotary. You may even convert one of them!! LOL

yea jack the rear up,and just cut the rubber rings that hold the mufflers on. then theres one on each side near the fender that have to be taken off with a socket.

oh and i had to take the y-pipe off to get the bolts on the driveshaft out so you will too unless you have tiny hands.

two rubber rings per muffler... then on each pipe there is a more rigig ring and its held in place by a bolt i think 10 mm.
he asked if he had to jack the rear of the car up to take the exsuast off. i would its easier that way imo.

the tranny doesn't have to come out unless you plan on doing some work to it, the exhaust can stay in if the tranny stays in as well.

Exhaust is shot... leaks everywhere...so the whole thing has to come down and be repaired/replaced. I think I'm going to take the tranny out so that we can look it over... I haven't driven this car more than up the road and into the shop so I might as well pull it now too see if there will be problem down the road... which would suck to have to pull the engine again to fix a problem I could fix now... Hopefully after work my buddy and I can get this thing out.

Just hope the rest of your family isn't into cars as well... We thought that this shop would be enough room... but once you have space, you get more cars and stuff (Family puts their cars in there... my rx7... uncles stang)...then it is full... then you wish you had built a bigger shop Its a vicious cycle!

Day 2...

Well it was a slow day today... So much for getting it out today. My buddy and I wrenched on this thing for a solid 2 hours after work and it seems like we got no where! The exhaust is out... that took about an hour... with a lot of PB blaster, Cursing(dirt in the eyes) and force... but she finally gave in can came down... BTW on the pass side who's idea was it to put that damn hanger way up next to the gas tank? We dint find that till the rest of the sstem was disconnected and it was a bitch to get off when the whole system was hanging on that...

well here is the (mostly) stock system after 14years in the North east... 3 seasons a year:

The big cat is rusted through in the corner... I think I'll just gut it and wrap/patch it for now. How will this effect the air pump and things like that... will i need to connect the airpump tubing back up?? Also the flange on the end of the pipe that connects the big cat and the second cat is not and was never welded on...

Thats all I have to show for todays work. We also pulled the shifter from inside and disconnected all the connections to the trasnmission.

I had real problems trying to disconnect the AC and power steering pump from the side of the engine. It took the rest of the 2 hours to figure out how to disconnect both systems from the engine without disconnecting the tubing. We couldn't get the pumps and brackets off once they were free from the engine either... hopefully once we start lifting the engine there will be more clearance and it will come off easily. Well maybe tomorrow the engine will come out... who knows?
