Is it possible to crank the car without the key? I bought an FC but the key must have dropped out of my pocket, I wanted to try starting the car after cleaning the plugs but since I don't have the key can't try. Being a long weekend it would be nice to work on it, I'm getting Mazda to make me a new one on Tuesday.

you can start it by hot wiring it, however you won't be able to move to due to the steering wheel lock

don't hot wire it that screws up your ignition wires. go to kragen or checkers or whatever it is were you are and get a remote starter. make sure the car is in neutral and simple hook one aligator clamp to the positive cable and the other to the spot where the ignition wire hooks up to. and pull the trigger. its cheaper to buy the remote starter then buy a new ignition wire set. and like icemark said you can't move it because of the steering lock. unless you take it off the steering column.

The connectors for the ignition switch are about a half foot from the switch itself. Follow the wires from the switch to the connectors.

One connector has two wires in it. One black. The other Black/white. The Black wire has 12vdc on it day and night. Pull that connector apart. Jumper the Black wire to the Black/White wire.

The black/white powers up a few fuses/busses that are required for ignition/main fuse/fuel pump etc.
Now all I THINK you need to do, is pull apart the ignition connector with the Black wire with a Blue stripe. Put 12v to that B/L wire and the engine should start as long as you have the clutch pushed in as you usually do when starting your car.

I assumed you know to jumper the side of the connectors that ARE NOT going to the ignition switch.

I THINK that if you do that the engine will start. Could be wrong....possible.

 

I decided to just wait for Tuesday, don't want to hack up the ignition to try it. Thanks guys.

the locking systems on these cars suck actually, ive started a couple of ones i had with a metal nail file from a pocket knife.... Had to when i lost my keys once! haha...

dude all you have to do to start it is take the bottom plastic cover off the steering column and the take the screw out of the back of the ign switch. The switch itself is held in by one screw, pull the switch out by hand. Then you can turn ign switch with a screw driver.

No damage, nothing irreversible and it should take no more than 5 minutes.

Also a decent lock smith should be able to make you a key based on the 4 digit code thats stamped on the driver door lock, you have to take the lock out.

This is usually far cheaper than going to the dealer. Here in southern ca a dealer will charge like 80-150 to make a key based on the VIN, a lock smith will do it with the 4 digit code for 20-30.

 

Mazda was open today but the MTO isn't so I needed to switch the ownership to my name first. Mazda said it would only be $10 to get a replacement key with the VIN.

Can't you just jump the starter relay? Maybe that doesn't work for the FC... But it's work for every car I've ever pranked at my old high school's parking lot!

jumping the starter relay works perfectly fine i did it on mine with a remote starter. it works perfect just make sure the car is in neutral. or you can get run over like my dad haha. hes fine so i can laugh at it.

 

jumping the starter relay is only going to make the car turn over, it won't start without the key in the on position.

10 dollars is a bargain. Everytime Ive asked Ive been quoted for 1 hour of labour.

 

slo's method worked great! Unfortunetely the car didn't start. It turns, but won't start. Also, it has VERY OLD gas so I need to drain it and put new gas. I was going to try spraying an easy starter into the intake but Canadian Tire was closed and i don't know where else I would find something like that.

Now to figure out how to drain the gas

They would certainly have it at a truck stop

 

I went to 4 different gas stations. Sunoco, Petro Canada, Shell, and Echo and neither of them had it. If I get it working with starter fluid, can I just fill the gas tank with good gas without draining the fuel lines?

Another way to start it that won't damage anything, just like on any car!!! Take off the steering coloumn cover, at the back of the ignition cylinder there's a little phillips screw. Remove the screw, pull the back out of the ignition cylinder (yes the piece with all the wires attached to it) Now get a suitable sized slot screw driver stick it in and turn!!! Just don't try to drive it, 'cause this method doesn't unlock the steering!!!
