Question, i was told that a automatic engine in a standard car is stronger, something about they way it was build, well let me know if this is right or not. s5 engines im talking about.

From my experience the manual and the auto both share the same motor. Neither is any stronger than the other. Recently in another thread ReTed mentioned that the auto ECU may have a more agressive ignition map. If you are deciding on which motor to buy; I would go with the lower milage option or the better maintained if you can determine such a thing.

The NA engines are basically the same, for a given series, irregardless of whether their mated to a 5-speed or AT. A couple minor differences between the AT and MT engines are the throttle bodies and the engine wiring harnesses. There are no separate ECUs for either AT or MT cars. For example, for 89-91 RX7s, five different ECUs are listed in the Mazda's parts catalog. Listed are one ECU p/n for the TII, two different ECU p/n's for the coupe (i.e., Fed. and CA), and two different ECU p/n's for the convertible (i.e., Fed. and CA).

Isn't there a difference in redlines too? I thought the manual tranny engine redlined 1000 RPM higher..?

The redline is only for the trans not the motor and the counterweights are the same as long you use the same series...if it wasnt then i would have blown my motor being i have an automatic motor in my car with a 5 speed.....I personally dont like automatic motors because they are not used to being redlined....so basically i have a broken in (100k used) motor that probally hasnt seen that many redlines in its day so trying to break it out of that mold is hard...my motor runs like a champ but its just slow i have yet to break a 15.5 in the quarter while my friend is busting 14.6 all day long and he got a 5 speed replacement motor.... get my drift on motors? if its 5 speed get a 5 speed replacement motor if its auto then it doesnt matter cause your tranny is controlling you hahaha..

OH, ok, so final verdict i should have gotten a standard engine instead? is going in a 90 gtu, i just wating for the RB clutch.

Rotorific: ok, cool, that makes much sense... ...I figured maybe it coulda been something with the counterweights (was trying to figure out why identical engines redlined differently) Didn't even think about the tranny... ohh well...

Actually auto engines are much better if you are going to buy it used. From personal experience manuals get more beating than autos so used auto engines are less likely to have blown seals or scratched housings. The balance of the engine has to be changed so that it can be used in a manual tranny.
