STALL OUTS r holding me back from doing everything i want to - to the car
Hey guys,
I have a 1989 Rx-7 GTU (non-Turbo) My throttle is off. The car almost stalls when i first start it and when i put it into drive or reverse, the RPM needle drops to almost 0 and it COMES DAMNED CLOSE to stalling out. Does anyone have a clue what i can do about this? I really need help. I have brought it to various shops and all they have done was adjust the throttle screw. It just made the problem worse. So if u have a solution to this - without me adjusting that damned screw - PLEASE TELL ME! I was told to try a volt-meter tester - is that right? Thanx 4 your help.

get either 1.) 2 DC voltmeters or 2.) a green and a red LED light.
on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the windshield washer fluid bottle there will be a green 3-prong plug that looks like this:
| (ground)
__ __
with the engine warm but off and ignition turned to "ON" position, stick the red prongs of the VM's in each of the non-ground holes, and both black prongs of the VM's in the ground hole.
you should get a reading of +10 volts on one and 0 or negative volts on the other. that is the correct TPS setting. you adjust the TPS screw until they give the proper readings.
if you're using LED lights then adjust until one of the LED is ON and the other is OFF.

where exactly is the screw located on a 89-91, haynes just says to adjust the air screw on the dyn chamber. Also..shouldn't you jumper the initial set conn, before adjusting the TPS? Is it normal for your check engine light to flash with the initial set conn jumpered? just wanna make sure i got the right conn.
doklen,
The initial set connector is on the drivers side by the leading coil. It is a single green connector. If you connect it to ground and your check engine light flashes when you turn on the ignition without starting it, the ECU has stored error codes, and is reading them out to you. 2-second flashes = tens digit, 1/2 second flashes = 1's digit. count the flashes, and you have error codes. For example, a code 27 would consist of 2 long flashes, followed by 7 short ones, followed by the light off for at least 2 seconds. The computer will flash the codes, lowest to highest, over and over until the ignition is turned off/jumper pulled out. Oh yeah, I don't know about 89-91 NA but for an 88 the adjust screw is on the top of the throttle assembly in the middle and on the plenum side of the throttle body. It should have a cap on it.
Hazard,
A simpler method of checking/adjusting your TPS is to meter a pin on the throttle body connector to ground. Looking on the back of the connector, it should appear like this:
/-\
1 2 3
4 5 6
Meter pin 3 to ground. If all is well, it will read 1.00 +- .03 volts. If it doesn't, adjust it. If the ECU is good, FlyGuy2000's check will verify correct operation. I know you did not ask for throttle adjustment, but this is the first step in setting up your idle. Let me know if there are still problems.
