Stabbing the Cas/timing Question
I have an engine that I have Taken out.It was Running but the Rear compression was Bad.Now,on the "new" engine,the CAS is just "in there".I would like to make sure that is is Roughly Set for Timing..How can I tell?..The Pulley Marks Are not really Visible(as far as my Bad eyes are!)..so Can I Get a reference For Timing from somewhere else besides the Pulley Marks/..like the Rotor Position in the Internals?..the Exhaust manifolds are Off Both engines,If that Helps any.Thanks Guys..I hope I can get an answer.I thank anyone who can help,In advance..cheers Gents!..Sincerely Dave/STYX.

It is pretty easy. First, you line up the yellow mark on the pulley to the top. Next you line up the ridge on the CAS gear to the dot on the CAS body (or is it the other way around?). Now you put in the CAS. You will probably need to rotate it a tad as you get it near all the way in to get the gears to mesh up.
There also should be directions in the FSM.

If the yellow paint is gone from the pulley marks, use the mark that is on the right if you are viewing the marks from the front of the engine. (if viewed from the driver's side, it would be the bottom mark). When you stab the cas, the dot on the gear should line up with the mark on the cas housing.

Hey!..GENTLEMEN!..THANKS!!!!..I did Manage to Find the Marks on the Pulley(paint is Long gone)..But I Did Not Know about the CAS MARK,until Just now..I got the Car all together(Again),and I got fuel,air and Spark,But Not "all together" ..the way that they should be,in order to Run!..I'll take another "stab"(pardon the Pun) at it tomorrow..I'll Post up again With my results!..cheers!,STYX!~

Well I did as mentioned.I got the car to Fire up and Die.I'm double checkin Everything Now..Definitely Have FUEL(new Filter..Gas all over me!),,Air..well that is Obvious..Yes..spark..I have spark..BUT it doesn't want to start!..just to confirm..where EXACTLY are the marks ON the CAS?..I was using the DOT on the spinning "thing' and a small PIN that protrudes up from the inside of the CAS.Thanks again,.STYX!~

Dave, if you've got a haynes manual it will have a pic of the alignment notches on the CAS. But, they're on the portion of the CAS that's inside the front cover.
When you pull it out, you'll see a dimple in the casting on the CAS and a notch on the gear. Line them up, look at the position of the rotor for reference, then slip it down inside while trying not to let it turn.
Done.

Dammit..SHE Started!..and runs!.PM Sent Joe..Thanks..Just to let Others know..the BOTTOM GEAR on the CAS is the one with the Mark.The outside of the Bottom of the CAS has the mark on it..the one that goes into the engine.You hold the Cas and It's Rotating assembly to prevent it from moving While stabbing it.

NO! NO! your correct!!! Line up the pully first with yellow mark, then proceed to remove the 10mm bolt on the CAS, and remove the CAS completly out. Line the small dot up with what seems to be an arrow. Lower the CAS back into position without turning, twisting, or rotating the dot from it's alignment. And your all good.

I broke half of the bolt off on the cas taking the nut off. Could someone tell me if the threads that screw the bolt in, not the nut, but the bolt. Are they left hand threads or right? I have just about wore the bolt down doing the lefty loosie 8-) and not having any luck...

If I recall that is just like a stud.The pin that the bolt goes onto.
If you take that "pin" out(vice grips) you can use a "regular common bolt" (10mm head) that is pretty well used ALL OVER the car..lol!

I tried to vise grips on the pin, I tried to take it our turning it left. Before I tried the turning it right I wanted to see if anyone knew which way it turns..

the easy and foolproof way to stab the CAS is to align the engine to the driver side mark(yellow/leading) to cover pointer, remove the CAS cover, align the dot to the boss on the CAS, drop it in. remove the CAS lid, now pop the plastic eye cover off the CAS lid and place it on the CAS, if the CAS is stabbed properly the pointer will be directly in the center of the small opening. reinstall the plug, done.

Could someone tell me what might be the cause of the timing to be off? I put a new cas in using the instructions from above. Set the timing, turned it off had a hard time starting it and when it did start the timing is off again. Any suggestions?

Heres a better view.
See how the gear is centered where the hole is, also have the yellow mark on crank pulley lined up with the pin on the block.
You can verify timing with a timing gun.
The only reason it would be far off is from having a different crank pulley than the original, they all only go on a certain way and dont necessarily have the marks for timing all in the same place.
Rotary evolution basically told you the same thing as i am, I figured a picture would help.
