rod knock (assuming the rod is not bent, the rod bearing clearance too large) can be caused only by oil starvation (IE not changing oil, not checking bearing clearances when rebuilding, running contaminated oil, etc...) it has nothing to do with the combustion chamber where detonation occurs.

Detonation will damage pistons, bend rods, crack cylinders and cyl sleeves, shock and break apex seals, dent rotors, and blow head gaskets. its an event that happens in the combustion chamber only, nothing to do with the oiling system.

Unless Nissan made a rotary... It's not ok in my book.

I mean, it is ok. It's not my car. It's just my face cringes every time I hear of a wankel being removed from a 7 in favor of a piston engine.

I personally think that if you're going to gut an FC3S and go with a non-rotary engine you should probably go with an LS1. This is PURE opinion of course. They do however offer a lot of bolt in kits to make this success possible, transmission spacers to use the 06 GTO 6 speed tranny, and it has been successfully done again and again. Having said that, I love the SR20 engine line. But you may not want to introduce yourself to a unique line of headaches. I know personally as an RX7 owner for many years just the mechanical trouble a rotary can give you will make you pull your own hair out, I can't imagine going in to some unknown territory if I wasn't a master mechanic, fabricator, and electrician.

Sr20 is a totally overrated engine! If it were an easy drop in, say like for the guys with a 240sx guys, go for it! "a couple of Nissan sr20s will pull a premium one week before race wars."(Johnny Tran from fast and furious)
