springs, shocks, or Both?
the car :90 vert
ok i am suspension retard, therefore i know nothing about this. my car dosen't handle like it use to over time since i got it it has gotten worest. examples: driving down the road, i down shift and stomp it, the back end drops drasticly, but more to the pass. than the other. also i got to get gas while the car is on E, fill it up and u can watch the back drop as u put gas in, then i go to drive home and people r flashing there lights at me cause my lights r now shining at them from the angle the car is sitting on cause of the full tank it has. I did the geto test where u push down and see how many time the car bounces (2 r 3 times in the back, none in the front) The backend also can't seem to go straight when its full, and bumps r killer on me.............. so what is it???? shocks? srprings? or both??? what kind should i get to replace? i want a smooth ride (daily driver) i am also poor so $$$ is an issue here to.

main problem sounds like your shocks are fried. if you want some good performing replacements, check out the KYB AGX shocks from www.k2rd.com. best price around for a set of performance shocks. ill probably be ordering a set shortly.

For springs: Tirerack.com I put AGXs and Eiback Pro-kit springs on my car. Ride height did not change and it is a decent set-up. IMO, if you just replace the struts/shocks, you will still not be happy. The springs are probably worn out and you will be able tell.

I second the springs & shocks. That should keep the car from swaying from side to side, randomly following ruts in the pavement, lisping from side to side behind a big truck, uneven wear on tires (insides wear out faster).

aftermarket springs usually lower the car. Eibach's on the vert is a bad idea. The progressive rate will not support the weight of the car and it will sag even worse in the back and ride like ****. I know you can still get stock springs from mazdatrix.
If you're replacing the shocks you should replace the springs too. It only makes sense because you have to take the springs out to replace the shocks.

I installed Tokico 5 Ways and matching Tokico Springs on my 88 and they work wonderful. It only dropped the car 3/4 of an inch front and rear. I think the set of shocks and spring only cost around $400.00.

I just did the apexi t-max's and suspension techniques springs and I love them. I can dial out the shocks to be softer than my buddy's talon with GC coilovers and 5 way tokicos. And then, I can crank them down to be stiff enough to lift tires in turns. I need new anti-sway bars!
The ST springs are a bit stiffer than stock, also just over 3/4" lower, and the car handles so well now.
Keep in mind that the vert and coup's rear springs are probably quite a bit different and I would be willing to bet no aftermarket companies are making vert springs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what i've heard that when replacing your old springs with lowering springs you don't notice as big of a difference in ride height because the worn springs have already lowered the car .5" to 1" over the years. Consequently, you can say that replacing the worn springs with springs of stock height will make a hugh difference and give you a large "wheel gap" effect.
With that said, if you like the way the car looks and a comfortable with the wheel gap size it might be in your best interest to invest in springs with a modest lowering effect.
Another option when it comes to springs would be RB. They have that suspension package; springs and sway bars for $428. That's a pretty good deal and allows you to completely upgrade your suspension for about $800 not including new bushings which is something else you might want to thing about doing while you're at it.
With that said, if you like the way the car looks and a comfortable with the wheel gap size it might be in your best interest to invest in springs with a modest lowering effect.

I was looking into the RB package. . .I think I want a lil more than that tho... but that deff seems like a good start. Do we have a big choice in springs for the FC. I hear the eibackh are no good?? Performence wise, like for light autocross, what would you guys suggest?

do u think i should only get rear springs and struts? the front of the car is nice and tight and stiff. i am asking this cause i am low on cash and in the process of buy an 88 n/a as a project car

cant drive around w/ lowering springs in the rear and stocks up front...not a good idea. Tein also makes some nice street springs for the FC...nice stuff as usual w/ them at great prices!!

well i was just gonna go with stock springs (since i can't find any aftermarket ones for the vert), and adjustible shocks, cause later on (around july) i will have so extra $$$ and i will upgrade the front so if anyone knows some,links where they sell rear shocks that r adjustable, relibal and pretty ceap feel free to put a link on here

susp. tech linear springs should be fine for a vert...they wont compress as much as eibachs bc they are not progressive. i'm sure looooooooots of people on the forums have springs in verts w/o problems.

If you wanted to you could get some lowering springs made. (or just source them really) The springs are equal width coils in the rear. The fronts are a funky shape that would cost a buttload to reproduce. But for the rears all you would need to do is find a shorter spring that has the same compression rate and coil diameter in the proper length for the drop you're looking for. (shoter uncompressed length) To do this you'd need the lenght of the unworn stock spring to compare with. The lenght vs height ratio would need to be made by knowing the lenght of the uncompressed stock spring and its compressed length and determining how much shorter the spring would need to be in order to give the ride height you're seeking.
You could also go with an aftermarket coil over kit and crank the rear perch up to get it level with the fronts, but this would hurt ride quality.

I would have to say that if I was going racing (of any sort) I would not use progressive rate springs at all. The Eibach Pro-Kit springs are good for the street and maybe for loooong sweeping bends at high speed, but not for launching or really tight road courses. Eibach does have a line of linear rate springs called "Sport-Line" or "Sport-Kit", I forget which.
If you can't find any aftermarket springs for the vert, you might find somone parting out a low mileage one. It could be better than worn out springs, but would have to be the right price (cheap!).

well i was looking at the ones above them KYB AGX Adjustable Rear , $85 each sounds like a good deal? with either brend new springs (orginal) r some thet r close to new for the parts section. the roads i have to drive on r pretty bad off so this is the reason y i am looking for a smoother ride. i also hardly ever race my car and think anything would be an improvement from what i have now
