speedo cable not turning???

well i got my new speedo cable in the mail today and installed it. i haven't had a speedometer for several months now (old cable broke inside)

so after installing the new speedo cable and finishing getting the gauge cluster back in, i realized that the speedo was indeed NOT working. i then unplugged the cable from the back of the cluster so i could keep an eye on it while i was driving down the street. the cable inside (the part that turns inside the insulation) was indeed not turning. i double checked to make sure that the cable was installed on the transmission end correctly and it was all good.

why isnt my speedo cable turning? this lack of mileage records is making my breakin a guessing game

mmm... hey guys... easy fix if you have to get a new line. check your current one though, it may have just slipped out of the housing or off the spedo drive in the tranny... its easy to check and doesnt take but a few minutes. I woudl suggest removing it from the tranny and pulling cable all the way out of its housing, and reinstalling with new lube (assembly grease or impact/silicone grease)

Remove the speedo drive (plastic worm gear) from the tranny, see if the spines are still decent enough to make good contact. I've got a couple spare 4.1 speedo drives here someplace if you need them.

Yes, the speedo drive gear is pretty easily accessable, and reliativly CHEAP from your local dealer. (About $20.00) When you order the new part you'll get just the gear on a rotating shaft. You'll need to remove the factory E-clip (C-clip?) and than install accordingly. Be aware that some transmission fluid "should" seep at time of removal and you may need to refill afterward depending on what type of tilt your vehicle is on during the repair.

Regards,
-Markus
