Spark Plugs
Spark Plugs
I'm going to check on my spark plugs tonight and see if they need to be replaced. I noticed new ones cost $35 each at AutoZone, though. Is there a place to buy good plugs cheaper?
Yeah, I know that price is totally nuts. I don't know anything about what makes the leading and trailing plugs special though, so I've shied away from getting anything other than the Mazda recommended part numbers until I hear from somebody here that it's okay to get something else.
Thanks guys, found those for $5.50 online (should work great - other than HKS filter, car is stock). Got a half-million other things to fix on the poor car, glad I can save money somewhere.

Spend the extra buck a plug and get the plats.
Also Advanced Auto Parts (may or may not be in your area) Carries these plugs for the same price as the online sellers. Just go ask for them by name, and if the local doesn't have them they'll ship them in within a day or so.

. Do you happen to know the part #'s for the platinum versions?I have some platiumums and some copper NGKs on my website right now, but I have not ordered NGK for a while so I don't remember what parts are in stock (the website will know however).
I think I had them around 6 or 7 bucks each

Rotarys eat steel leading plugs every 2 oil changes.
Leading - NGK - BUR7EQP (platinum) should be about $7 ea at Autozone.
Trailing - NGK - BUR9EQ should be about $5 ea.
That set should last maybe 20,000 miles.

From what I have been reading, platinum is not a great choice for a boosted vehicle.
From Kenne Bell's site:
From Kenne Bell's site:
What spark plug should I run with a supercharger? One heat range cooler than stock. Denso Iridium is the best plug we've ever tested. Avoid Platinum plugs. Always set gaps at .035". Denso irridiums are factory gapped at .044".

I'm curious on this as well...it's been mentioned that the 7 and 9 plugs are good for stock to mildly modified cars....is there a better choice for a more modified car? What "level" of modification are these statments based on? What is the difference between iridium and the standard plug?

The leading plugs get twice as much spark wear as the trailing.

Yeah, the 9s are harder to start on those frigid Tucson mornings, but most will agree that if you start running large numbers, the 7s are just too hot, and will cause pre-ignition.
