Spacer washer behind water pump?

Did all n/a 13b's have the two spacer washers behind the water pump or is it just the '88 and prior motors?

I removed the water pump from my '91 motor and realized it did not have the spacers.

The only other motors I have replaced a water pump on have been '86 or '87 models.

They should all have them.&nbsp 13B-REW's of off FD's run a connected spacer that's a little harder to lose.&nbsp These stupid washer shim the water pump housing so it sits evenly with the stock "figure 8" Mazda OEM gasket installed on the "other side".

I cna confirm that s6 adn later motors, and s4 and earlier motors, use the spacers. However, I have yet to find an s5 that uses them. In fact, I used a set of spacers by mistake on an s5, and had to take them out because they caused a leak.

So no, s5 should not have them.

Okay. Mixed answers here. I've had to recently pull out my Water Pump off my (j-spec, If It matters) s5 TII Motor. I was abit confused to learn that those spacers weren't present. I thought all models/series had It.

Anyone else can chime In and let us know If the s5's had these Spacers? Did Mazda catch on and eliminate these 2 Spacers like that silly doughnut spacer for the s4 Alternator?

As I just said, s4 and FD's use them, but s5's do not. Apparently on s5's, the water pump housing is made thicker instead.

...just playing devils advocate here. I thought there may have been a correlation with the Water Pump Housing being thickened up, to compensate for the lack of the spacers, as the elimination of that doughnut I mentioned earlier.

But I admittingly found It strange that Mazda would skip the s5 series In respect to the question at hand.

Kevin is right, S5's do not have them.

Hell, I still remember the 4 hours I spent on a sunday searching for them on the first S5 motor I did. What a PITA.

It's the front end plate that got a little bit of extension on the bolt boss.
Yes, it's the thickness of the gasket. and the S5 end plates do not need the spacer...
This is a point that some people should keep in mind if they are ever mixing and matching end plates from different years.

Edit... I'm fairly sure it was the end plate.. but for some reason now I am questioning that.... feel like I forgot something.. oh well... maybe I'm wrong, don't you hate when you can't remember something?!

I now have gone 3 months and around 4,000 on the motor I was building when I posted this. I did not use any spacers and I have not had any leaks.

I've got my old s4 water pump and waterpump housing (with their s4 gaskets), that I plan to install to my new motor with an s5 T2 front iron (s4 front cover but I don't think it matters). Do I install the shims or not?
