Unhappy SOS Won't start and floods

I'm a newby. I just got an 88 Rx7.

It ran real rough one day and had no horses. It wouldn't start. A friend suggested I had a vaccume leak. I found a hose that had detached. I reatached it.

It won't start. I put the plugs on the block to test for spark and I'm not seeing anything.

I replaced the plugs and spark plug wires. I tested the coil packs, and they were all in spec. But it doesn't seem like it's getting spark.

It almost starts and then floods real bad. I've tried the "pulling the fuel pump plug trick to clear the floods" trick, but it doesn't seem to be working. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Maybe the timing? Has anyone messed with it? If youre getting spark and fuel and its not flooded it has to be timing or a vacuum leak, or something more serious. Im actually trying to solve this exact problem myself.

Welcome.

If it's flooded bad enough, the EGI fuse trick won't do it. You might need to crank it some w/o plugs to expell the extra fuel. Then clean & reinstall the plugs.

Anytime you're worried about flooding, keep your foot to the firewall when cranking. In fact on a car that's prone to flooding it's a good habit to get into. This will get it running in cases where w/o you may have had to pull the fuse.

If it's catching some, it sounds like you have spark.

What were the circumstances surrounding the rough runnng and no power that one day?

Are your coils getting 12V? I forgot which of the 3 wires to check... and which one is ground... but shouldnt be too hard to figure out. If so, then see if you have less than 2 ohms or so of resistance in the coil.

Have you checked for ECU codes?

Near the trailing coils, there is a single wire, with a green connector on it (1 prong). Attach a wire from that, to the neg terminal of the battery (ground it). Go inside your car, turn key to "ON" position (don't start.) Watch the check engine light.

It will illuminate for about 4 seconds, then go off. It will start flashing. A long dash is a tens digit, quick flashes are ones digits...

Example.

Code 12 would be "LOOONG [pause] SHORT SHORT"
30 would be "LOOONG LOOONG LOOONG"

so on and so on. There is a pause inbetween codes as well.

Then you need to download a copy of the Factory Service Manual. I'll go ahead and paste up what the FSM says about ECU codes, but its a damn good thing to have that FSM. Really comes in handy.

See if you pull one.
